I am in the process of purchasing a brake conversion from CRS.
The one that uses HQ callipers, has anybody on here used this before? what master cylinder did you use, i know an XB item is the go but someone told me the drum/drum combo is the go. Also i plan to convert the rear to disc barke hopefully using a modified EF/EL diff as i cant seem to find a centura LSD diff so on that point what setups have been used for the master cylinders to feed both sets of discs. Thoughts or experiences please.

If you keep a system, like EA to ED falcon brakes, its all good.
You'll have to narrow down the diff housing & axles.

hi mate i havent had much experiance with the crs brake kits, but with some of the brake kits out there for early falcons arent worth the money there asking, because the state laws are so different from each other, eg sone brake kit you can buy from a shop in nsw isnt legal in queensland without spending a couple of grand to get some one to strip the whole system an measure the volumes of the master system an the pistons in the calipers an then to a pressure test, what i an a few mates use xf brakes grag the whole stub complete with rotor an caliper an swap them over but you will notice the tie rod ends are different sizes so what we do is get two bushes made up to suit the outer measure of the xf tie rod an the inner to suit the xm, we also use the master cylinder an vac booster it takes a bit of stuffing around to getr it fit like recessing the inner gaurd an redrilling the the mounting bracket inside, but in using the whole system out a particuler car that wieghs the same or heavier you dont have to get the system tested, well in qld any way

I agree, go and get a complete s**t box XF, and you will have everything you need for the entire braking system, plus lots of other goodies you can use later on in your XM.
As for the brake booster, you can use a remote booster, like a VH44 or similar, like the V8 XR/XT's used to use. You can mount them behind the inner gaurd to make the engine bay a bit tidier. Good luck.

I have had early falcons with both the XF (dont like the steering) braking system and the XR XT (just not big enough) braking system and i have ran vh 40/44 boosters in the past.
What i was looking for was anyone who has fitted either the HQ or VL callipers and how they found there performance as well as different options on master cylinders beside the usual 1s. Also i was interested in duel remote boosters and were people have mounted the second 1 has i have seen them in all different places.

Hi,
About 20 years ago,I rebuilt from a bare body shell,an XM panel van that was headed for the crusher. The body was mint, but had a lot of parts missing, and it was a great restoation/modification challenge. Every part I put into the van,was a standard ford part, apart from the diff.I'll try to remember all the mods I did. Engine:standard 289 Winsor V8 2 barrel Auto-lite carb G/box:TD 250 Cortina single rail Borg-Warner 4 spd.Tailshaft from the donor XT 302 Fairmont.A straight in fit, just new uni joints. Diff:XY 302 2.93:1(same ratio as for 289).To get it to fit without cutting the shallower wheel arches, you can cut & sleeve the RHS axle housing tube, and fit a LHS short axle. The only difference is in the shape of the diff cover. Brakes:I used a dual circuit master cyl from an XT Fairmont, with a remote VH44 power booster. Front disc brakes from an XB were fitted, using the whole XB stub axle assy & brakes. The upper & lower ball joint tapers are the same as the XM.That way you don't have to try and adapt Holden discs. You'll just have to play around with rear brake slave cylinder sizes to avoid locking brakes. Front suspension:standard upper & lower arms(just re-bushed) To use the original XM tierods,I made tapered sleeves to bring the taper up to the equivalent size of the XR to XB tierod ends. Rear suspension:Standard, springs re-set & new bushes fitted. Plus re-wiring etc,and it turned out to be one of the most reliable & economical Fords I've ever owned. On a trip to Qld. in '86,it was returning between a minimum of 32 MPG,up to a great 35 MPG,and this was at a steady 55 to 60 MPH.Five years later, went to an '82 351 Auto Bronco. Still a great goer, just thirstier. Cheers, Kevin |

All the conversions offered are great and i have done them before.
I am looking for someone who has used the CRS conversion to HQ or VL callipers. Not XF XB XT brakeing as i have done it before, i think i have said that in previous posts, i didnt like the steering and i want to keep the origional stubs. Has any1 on this site carried out such a conversion???????.
