My EBII auto slips when it changes into fourth gear. You can hear the revs rise significantly, and then drop back down as the next gear engages.
Sometimes when i disembark from the car i also notice a hot oil smell. That could be old oil somewhere in the engine bay, but i don't think so. The other day i climbed a long steep track in second gear. I stopped for a moment, and when i took off again the car seemed to have a lot of resistance, like the handbrake was on. I kicked it down to first and floored it and it seemed fine, but i wonder. When i replaced the auto suction filter recently there was a small amount of small aluminium particles, too small to feel between your fingers.

I don't know what the problem is. Maybe adjustment is needed, or a band/clutch is slipping because the material is all worn out, or maybe a solinoid isn't actuating properly . . . i don't know, i haven't opened or worked on an auto gearbox.

hot oil smell would be the gearbox oil burning,
gearbox oil burning will lead to gearbox dying, slipping would be because of the gearbox dying, resistance would be because of it dying again, and the little metal bits you found in the fluid when flushing the oil is a sign of major wear which usually results in the gear box dying... it may still last you a while, i wouldn't be giving it a hard time though...

Thanks for that. I have been considering driving about 2800km to Adelaide and back for christmas, now i don't think i should do that.
As an aside, i wonder if maybe that 'resistance' issue was actually a moment of LHM, due to overheating (long slow steep hill), which would mean running in third gear? I recall using the T-bar to put it in first, and that's when it drove strongly again. Furthermore, the engine also got warm, i wonder if the hot trans oil in the radiator reservoir can have a significant effect on the water temp? If it was running in third gear that might have been tough for the motor too. (btw, i also have an o.e. trans oil cooler).

Sounds like the Auto is on the way out to me. Your sig says the odo reads 315K, if the Auto has done that much, dont be surprised if it needs work.
If it went into LHM, I reckon it would hold 3rd Even if you tried to force it to first, as the auto is electronically controlled. |

Don't go too far from home. Mine started slipping in 4th out on the highway recently. A day later, 2nd was gone....
Only 140,000 on it, serviced, two coolers, driven gently most of the time. When they go, they go! Mike

the i6 has alot of torque everywhere, iv known people who had there car in limp mode with out even realizing it...
it can drive on the one gear for hours with no problem, its there to help the tranny not damage it, and if it were in LHM manually selecting first would not do anything. your best of taking it to a transmission specialist and finding out whether its best to fix it or have it replaced with a reco one

just do a full flush of the torque converter, lines, coolers etc and a filter. i did it on my XF 3 speed when it started slipping and it solved it. i sold the car 6 months later and it was still good.

My ute's odo says 315k and the auto is fine, but the car in question is my sedan which has done 225k. The auto was very low in oil when i got the sedan and maybe that caused accelerated wear. The car went into LHM for another reason recently, and as far as i recall i could actually control it manually.

But i decided to drive the ute to adelaide. I averaged a steady 11L/100km. Not bad i reckon. In the sedan i average around 9.5L. If i ended up driving the sedan in third gear it would not be any worse than the ute. I wonder if the trans is too old and sus to bother repairing? And people always talk large numbers for reco? I was thinking a low kay second hand unit from a reputable wrecker? Maybe an AU unit, if that can be done?

I did that when i did the engine swap, but it hasn't been enough.
