After a somewhat spirited drive of the ef ghia tickford 6 to Geelong on Wednesday- I got home only to have that dreaded lifter sound- but not the slight one you get in the morning on startup but a loud clack, clack, clack.Same noise the old eb used to make- but it fixed itself *lol*

I am sure its lifters as clacks get faster with rpm, motor still running fine and smooth- and its most definently the sound you get in the morning on startup but louder and permanent.

Although I don't believe in "magic in a bottle " as other guys have said. I still poured in a bottle of lifter free...

You guessed it....still there ha,ha
Now what i was wanting to know is, having a very limited "internal" mechanical knowledge, and being just after xmas being strapped for cash - Are the lifters hard to replace? Is there a tech doco? (i Cant find one)
or is it so cheap that I may as well get mechanic to do it?

do u mean spirited as in thrashed?

mine used to do that when it was low on oil.

did an oil change to some thicker stuff and it went away.

No , not thrashed- just overtaking on 100 flat to floor- I expect a ford 6 to be able to do that fine, let alone a tickford donk- it still revs beautifully and freely- just with clack,clack....!

Oil was done 300km's ago! and level is good, right visco- and fuchs brand.

may sound stupid, but you did the filter at the same time yeah?

What weight oil did you use? not saying you used the wrong one, but you may need to turn to a slightly lighter oil. lifter free has mixed results, does work from time to time on falcons, it just lightens the oil a bit. It sounds like one of your lifters has collapsed, not pumping up. HLA's are easy enough to change, a mechanic will rape you and tell you they need to be replaced. pretty much all you need to do it rocker cover off, and just do the first stages of a cam change, up to the point you have the rocker gear off, make sure you tape the HLA's into position before lifting off so you don't drop any into the sump. its not actually to hard, its a good task to undertake for those not too mechanically minded too. there is plenty of info on here as to how to rebuild the HLA's once you have the gear off.

Tickford gear is not much different to stock gear, slightly lrger ports, different cam and heavier valve springs, engine component wise this is the main difference anyway.

If you get stuck you can always ask.

Oh yeah, simple tools only required for this job too, only thing you may need to borrow that is not in a basic tool box is a torque wrench.

If you do end up replacing them don't bother going to ford I was quoted $70 each, bit of a joke really when I can get a full set for the same price as one from auto pro.
