G'day
My fathers xe falcon doesn't currently have air conditioning or power steering, but as you would know cars get bloody hot quickly and are a pain in the a**e to steer without power steering. I have the whole air con system and power steering system out of an xf. How hard would it be to transfer these 2 systems into his car? Cheers

Be careful when getting parts for the xe
I have found there is three different models (part changes) you have upto sept 82 (end of V8) seem to be xd after sept 82 which are xe and then you have another (dont know the change date) which uses a lot of xf parts. amazing what you find when building a car

Fitting aircon to any X series is a pain in the a***, the biggest part is removing the dash and heater box, you will need a donor XE (XD has minor differences but can be used if you like playing) for parts. If it had been fitted with A/C but the lines etc have been removed it is a much easier job, but it still can be a big one.
Power steer can also be a pain, XE 4.1 uses a different harmonic balancer to XF, so finding a aircon and pwr steer front pulley maybe hard, I just changed to a reco XF harmonic balancer and fitted a front pwr steer pulley to that when I fitted pwr steer to my XE back in 96, saved a lot of headaches, I actually bought new XF lines and balancer pulley etc from Ford, pulley was cheap (checked wreckers at the time) and it is worth it using new pwr steer lines especially the high pressure line, but these might not be available now. Some of the items you will need: pwr steer pump, pwr steering lines/and adaptors depending on pump used, pwr steering box, pwr steer pitman arm, either donor car column or push collapsible column shaft in about 25mm to fit pwr steering box (probably not a good idea), probably new fibre coupling for between box and column shaft (often perished etc), pulleys to suit harmonic balancer and steer pump, bolts and probably something else I have forgot. Recommend getting the steering box reconditioned before fitting, pwr steer box is more of a pain to fit or remove (especially V8 with headers) and more likely to leak and wear beyond adjustments. Saying this, I like X series pwr steer boxes when adjusted properly and wheel alignment etc is correct with maybe a little bit more castor, it is worth the effort of doing the conversion.

I run a power steered XF every day and I find that the steering is too heavily assisted and devoid of feel. It is also too quick for my liking. A friend of mine has an XE with non powered steering and I much prefer it, there is a heap of feel and the steering is not too heavy. I feel confident pushing it 10-15 kmh faster through the same bends.
