My ef has a vernier gear and runs 4 degrees advanced, would this contribute to my pinging problem?
Also car has au head and gasket and is always run on 98 fuel, does the au head and gasket combo bring up the comp much?
I also put 1 range colder spark plugs in and it did nothing to help the pinging.
If my knock sensor is rooted will it cause the motor to ping?
I run the cam timing advanced to compensate for the 250 000km donk
Theres a few questions there but hopefully someone can help, cheers.

Why would you run the cam advanced just cause it's got 250kms on it? That's what the tensioners for. Pinging is caused by ignition timing being to far advanced, and yes the knock sensor is there to retard the timing when it picks up detonation. If your sensor isn't working it won't cut the timing hence the detonation. Under what conditions is it detonating? Your answer will helpto diagnose further.

Hope that helped.

I advanced the cam timing because it gives the car more bottom end, which this car is lacking even with an xr diff.
It pings under light acceleration but doesnt seem to ping all the way to redline.
Its almost like when you accelerate it takes a while for the ecu to work out the timing so it pings for a bit until it works itself out then its ok.
I struggle to find this prob because if its not the knock sensor, or the boost in comp from the au head and gasket, im lost as to what it may be because i feel i have most of the bases covered.

I have the same problem.
I've changed everything possible.
Runs great on cold mornings, but one the temps around 25+deg it'll ping (no matter where the temp gauge is)

Some say its the extractors, Im yet to install a stocko header and cat to see if it resolves it.

other than that, 2 years+ of annoying me, I'm leaving it alone.

Just put it down to being one of the little ghosts that haunts the ford product

here's an idea, instead of being d**k with comments like that.

pull the rocker cover off set the gear back to 0 and see if the pinging stops.

advanced cam timing will cause pinging in certian engines, so as Tickford6 said, pull some cam timing out and you will probably see the problem easy or dissapear completely. Your on the right track by adding a bit of advance for a tired chain, albeit a bandaid fix for a stretched chain. The tensioner will pul the tension onf the chain, however look at the way it works, it retards the cam in doing so. Your knock sensor works during your closed loop end of the maps, however if Im not mistaken it is disregarded when in O/L or WOT, similar to how LAMBSE is non effective in O/L and KAMRF is used for you fuel tables

no I think the knock sensor operates at all times below 4500 rpm

It still pings its a*** off at 0 degrees cam timing, so i can rule that out.

Was the cam gear/cam/timing done in a back yard with toys or in a propper workshop with mechanics who know what their doing with propper tools?

I think you get where Im going with this.... It all comes down to initial installation and propper set up.

Im a mechanic, its not hard to install a vernier cam gear and its certainly not hard to adjust it either.
There is no secret to adjusting cam timing on a 4.0.
Its not the cam timing causing the pinging anyway.

no not a joke, I didnt know the OP was a mechanic. Also there are plenty of people who have a mate of a mate who can put a cam in but at the end of the day have no idea what their doing, hence my last comment.... it comes down to instalation and proper tuning/adjustment.

wasnt aimed at slaging anyone.
Sorry.
