Hey all,
After much procrastination i have decided to keep the EF. So this is how the story goes. I have my old engine sitting out in the shed and i want to build stuff!!! It may be coming up for a headgasket change and it has 240K on it. So my questions to you are: 1. How much effort/money would it take to rebuild my engine??? 2. How much can i do myself/what do i have to get a mechanic to do??? 3. What should i do to it??? (I want some good power....I was thinking port & polish/upgrade cam and get a cam angle adjuster(forgot correct term)) Thanks heaps in advance CHeers

Do the rebuild yourself..
firstly go out and buy yourself a full rebuild kit which will include bearings, rings and all gaskets.. the only thing i would send out is the block to get the bores re-done, and the head to get serviced plus work done.. all up your looking at about $1200 if u shop around, ofcourse a lot more depending on which performance parts u want. |

Thanks for that FORDom.
Where would i be able to buy all the rebuild kit from??? Is it able to be sourced from repco and places like that??? Also i was looking at doing a bit performance wise. Other than the cam and vernier gear what else could be done?? (I dont want to go as far as doing the ecu and stuff, i still want something fairly driveable/inexpensive). I was thinking the following: Port & polish Get the head shaved and put an AU gasket on it Lumpiest cam without changing ecu If funds permit pistons? SO, if you guys had say $2000 to spend on recoeing engine....what would you do???????

I reckon leave the block alone and spend two grand on your head/cam

yeah you can get acl race series rebuild kits through repco...check out rocketind.com for em.
http://www.rocketindustries.com.au/descriptions.php?partno=ACLRAC9400XXX1 you can custom select your dimensions for each part depending if you want stock sizes or oversized pistons or watever..the 3.9L kit was RRP $766 plus gst and freight through rocket industries so i cant imagine the 4.0L kit being any more pricey.

sure u can buy the kit yourself
but before u do that the engine needs to be pulled down then everything checked for what size u need for the bearings and psitons etc hell your block could be in good nick for it to only have a light hone and a new set of rings put in to me it soudns liek u are unsure imho pay the pros to do it find a reptable builder who knows the ford 6 in your area go through with them what u want out of the engine ie full hardcore N/a future turbo or just stock rebuild with budjet in mind for mild headwork and cam to match this way the builder can get the correct parts for the job and do what needs doing

i would have to agree with Disco Frank. if you can find some one to do it all. you only have to discuss with them what you want done.

if my budget was 2k, idd possibly suggest a differant route;
get a low km AU motor, put the "port/polished" head from your sig on it, jam in a big cam, and get a dyno tuned chip onto it (chiptorque etc). then throw any spare cash on smaller stuff that takes your fancy, dba rotors, whiteline swaybars, bigger throttle body, better airboxes, perhaps some ghia bits for inside etc etc. |

To get a good rebuild it will cost you about $2400-2800 hundred
So thats boring, honing, line bore the works or you can get away a little cheaper but do it once and do it properly and might as well shot pen rods and crank just incase you turbo charge it later.

I like what frank said.
Also though, is the engine that bad??? Why does it need a rebuild?? Do a compression test, does it make bearing noise? You will probably be ok with front and rear main seals, timing an sump gaskets, then spend you remaining money doing the head.

You need to know what the engines like inside.
If there isn't to much bore wear, just buy a basic rebuild kit (no pistons) give the bores a hone and fit new rings and bearings. Actualy, because it's already on a stand i'd give it a re-ring and bearing even if it wasn't burning oil or had low compression before. An engine with good ring seal will always make more power. You can always add other things later, but it's hard to do a rebuild after the engine is in. have the head fully serviced and put a new cam in while you're there. that should just about use your money. |
