hey all... having some trouble with the misses BA Fairmont...
My AU lives at about 4000rms and hasn't ever gone over 1/4 of the temp gauge - only ever have coolant overflow after a service (when overflow is filled to max) Yet the BA will jump up to 1/2 temp and cover my driveway in coolant (completely empties the overflow) every time i drive up my road (its 2kms of fairly steep hill) or if i give it a bit (over say 4500rpms) so iv had the engine flushed which included a few gaskets and a overflow cap and that didn't do much... now thinking of getting a new radiator (FTG has "BA NEW 6CYL RADIATORS $125" at the moment)... any other recommendations....? The running temp of the AU did drop a little when i got the extractors... but i already had the catback... would extractors + a larger intake also help...? Cheers Cam

The BA is supposed to run slightly under halfway the gauge, just the thermostat they have in them. It shouldn't overflow, was the system bled for air when the coolant was changed?

has also had a new thermostat... im now fairly sure that iv never heard the thermofans turn on... whats the best way of testing... can i just connect 12V to the loom or what???

check for coolent level, run the motor hot with all the heater vents open on full.
check the pressure cap too

Unless you have done a headgasket, that can pressurise overflow bottle when engine turned off. I would get a new cap too i once thought i did a headgasket and it turned out to be a cap.

Why don't you swap over the thermostat to a lower temperature/earlier opening one? That way the thermos kick in earlier and the thermostat opens earlier. this may help it and its cheap to do.

the thermostat doesn't tell the thermo's to kick in. a temp sensor does

top up the coolant and run the motor with the capp off the overflow bottle.. watch it and see if you get any bubbles....
if theres nothing,, put a new cap on it.. if there is you've got a headgasket problem. it doesnt sound like its dumping the coolant due to temperature.. halfway on the gauge isnt that hot. -mitch

thats what i'm saying. the thermostat doen't tell the fans to turn on. but if the temp sender is s**t it might not engage them

the fans are turning on when i turn the a/c on but they arnt loud like most cars... had to put a torch on to see then turn on/off...

my ba runs just under half ever since i got it. dumping overflow coolant suggests to me a blocked over flow hose to the radiator.
