its not fairly old. he has just had a head gasket done less then 5 thou k's ago. it just seems strange that it rises so much that it overflows out the overflow bottle

dude, check the thermo fans are working, the thermostat is working and there isnt any air in the sys.
there is no reason the thing should overflow that much

does it keep coming out the overflow continuously?
if it keeps pissing out it is a cracked head...just changing a head gaskit aint gunna fix it if it has a crack and wasnt tested properly last time the head was off

na, i think he's talking the overflow pipe.
in that case its a pressure cap issue

Gogetta might be on to something though.
From cold open the cap and see if it's blowing bubbles.

doesn't anyone think that prehaps it should be full to start with ? they suck back from the overflow when they heat up to disperse heat then when the entire volume is hot it expands. if it's low then sucks back it will suck back air into the radiator causing more expansion pushing more out the overflow. ?

huh? Its either getting too hot (which normally wouldnt cause this anyways) or the cap is damaged and releasing pressure... Or the head or head gasked is cracked/broken and the cooling system is filling with combustion gasses which is forcing the coolant out the cap. |

I had this same issue before and a new cap fixed it. Also make sure that you have correct mixture of coolant. Most often this is caused by boiling coolant creating pressure then escapes via overflow pipe. Coolant should not boil if correctly dilluted.

It won't suck back if there's a crack/blown gasket/leak more than likely.

yer and i'm sure a micro crack would pressurise a 115kpa pressurised system through combustion..... how much compression you running ?
air inside the system sounds more likely, which could be created by a crack but it's not combustion efforts that raise compression in the cooling system, this much 'blow by' would never be seen in any ford imho. it's got to do with air entering the system and nothing to do with lost compression.
