No sure if this is the right place but ive have a mazda cappella. Every time I go to crank it over, the starter turns the engine then disengages after a couple of seconds. Being a older engine, it takes longer to start.I put a second hand one in and still has the same problem.
When start is out. It spins fine and does not disengage until i turn the key. What could it be? Any help would be useful.

ive fixed a few of these problems in 1300 mazdas. it is the ignition switch. there is an arm which comes from the back of the key barrel and it turns the switch section to engage the starter. this link bar bends from too much use or too much pressure on the key and can be gently twisted back straight,(just remove switch from back of barrel
) or you can wedge a bit of cardboard in the switch slot to tighten it up again. once you get it apart you will see what i mean |

yeah I remember my mate a a capella and the indicator switch mechanism was terrible. He had to rebuild it completely. he also had problems with the starter switch.
why not fit a big red start button?

why not fit a big red start button? Ricer is not nicer... Going to keep it old school for now... Brother had a look at it today. Still same problem. Any other advice? When we took the starter out to test it. The metal shaft which spins the fly wheel does not disengage. But when you put the starter back on the gearbox and it does turn but then disengages and keeps spinning.

When its out there is no real strain on it, so as it only does it when you put it back in, i reckon its a weak solenoid. The initial "shock" of starting = it goes in, but when the starter motor starts turning, it could be pulling enough power to leave not enough for the solenoid. Maybe change the solenoid, i reckon it'll be your problem. Test this theory by crossing over the terminals on the starter, if it still does it, it'll be your problem. Andrew.

That is what my brother and dad think at the moment. Are the solenoids changeable?

Yes, you will be able to get one from a wrecker or most auto parts stores.

If the starter goes into mesh with the ring gear and the starter keeps turning but the engine doesn't then you may have a slipping drive or Bendix.It usually sounds like a whirring noise but louder.If you bought a 2nd hand starter then you may have 2 starters with the same problem.Keep us informed of your progress.Kevman
