mates fitting a ba 6 into a 69 merc sounds weird but its going in. they found an e series 6 cyl 5spd and wondered if it will bolt up to the ba 6

Almost but NO, an AU will if you want a mechanical clutch, these are rare as the proverbial. At a pinch you can use the E series bell housing but the bottom 4 bolts won't fit, two can be made to fit but the bottom two are a no go.

so if they use an e series box with an au bellhousing , will that work?

it'll have to be an AU manual bellhousing, the auto bellhousing is different
