Has anyone experienced this problem?:
When weather is hot I can't turn over the engine at all, it is completely dead.
I discovered that if I keep the ignition turned on fully as though starting, and at the same time I thump the gear shifter, it starts.

I have tried changing the ignition switch and also just changed the neutral safety switch, but problem is still there.

It appears to be an electronic problem.

Any Auto-Electricians or Mechanics who can tell me what needs replacing.

Thanks

Mark

Sounds like a Body Control Module problem, they are located above the LHS of the lower dash above your leg.If you hold the key in the start position and tap the dash there it should start.
The module must have a dry solder joint. When it gets really hot mine does play up sometimes.

Thanks,

Appears it could be the Smart BCM, I am going to pull this out and repair it!

Interestingly I did a search and found similar issues for an EF in the Toyota Forum. Don''t go in there, only go there if you want to waste you time with those who have nothing to do.

BCM or a wire that is loose. Tranny switch will only stop car starting in gear. Do lights always come up when attempting to crank?

Thank to all who replied.

I pulled out the BCM Smart module, redid all the joints and appears this has fixed the problem.

Regards to all

what joints do you have to redo? inside the BCM or just the plugs?

My 93 ED Wagon does the same thing, the smartlock computer is the cause of my problems. I have mine secured to the steering column and when it wont start I thump the steering wheel while holding the key on, fires up each time then.
