Take it out, put the engine on TDC, make sure the rotor is pointing towards #1cyl on the dizzy, , when you insert it, it will twist a bit, therefore turn the rotor back a bit, until it lines up, once you do it, you will know what i mean, this is because gears are helical cut, on the cam.

Line it up with the TDC mark on the balencer. Pull the dissy out. Line up the rotor with the "start" mark on the plastic cover under the rotor. When the dissy seats in correctly the rotor should end up over the "finish" mark. Start then re-time the ignition.

You probably have it 180 deg out ... I did that by accident once ... was getting mad flames back out through the carby on an XF I had at the time.
LOL

180 degrees will cause the car to not start ... if it does it's lucky ... but you'll get lovely backfiring through the intake at the same time.

If the firing of the injectors occurs with no relevance to position of the motor, as in timed dependant on revs, then it should fire straight up. The rotor turns at half speed, so if the motor is turned over one full revolution, then the dizzy will be pointing forwards. Just guessing but

IGNITION timing, not injector timing

if the dizzy is 180 degrees out, instead of the spark being at the end of the compression cycle, it'll come just as the inlet valve opens

im having similar troubles
what id like to know is, if i do get the nice backfire/flames out the intake, is the dizy pretty much 99% 180degrees out? or say 90 degrees out?

have no timing marks on my balancer and trying to set timing by checking TDC through the spark plug hole, so could be 180 out, but cant seem to find a middle ground between backfire and backfire lol

Put your finger over the number 1 spark plug hole while turning over the engine, if you feel air coming out your on the compression stroke so when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder your on tdc. hope this helps.

Or take all the plugs out except number 1 and then trun the motor over. Will get tight when compression of #1 starts, check your balancer is in the right place.

putting the cam timing 180 out is the same as putting the dizzy 180 out.. you still result in the spark occuring in a cylinder with an open inlet valve.... but if you put them both 180 out.. now thats how to get some serious hp :)
