Just wonderin if anyone knew some simple tips to get any extra grunt out of my car. It is a 4L XR6 Engine in an EL Fairmont Ghia. I'm told to put an EF Split induction system (between airbox and throttle) on it to start off with and also a 2.5 inch exhaust as well.

^^ cause hopefully some people will have the foresight to even look at the titles of stickies when they first come to a site, and when there's one's as blatantly obvious as "i6 modification guide" or "answer's to all your 6 cylinder questions" then they immediately answer half the questions posted on here.
And if this happened then there wouldn't be 50 pages with the same question, making it easier for threads with specific questions that need answering to be found and not throwing the same stuff at members with the knowledge (of whom have written tech docs in the first place).

all good. In answer to replacing with the ef intake, not worth it. Apparently its better but your far better off just replacing it with a 3in steel pipe as you will see has been done lots (i think there's a thread going around atm 'show us your intakes').
About the only down side is steel has a lower specific heat than plastic, but seeing as the car generally runs for more than a few minutes the plastic intakes still warm up anyway.

Re you specific question, just get the airbox lid from an EF, as it has a trumpet intake and a much larger exit hole. Go to Supercheap and purchase the aluminium pipe in 300mm length by 3" in diametre and use it between the airbox and the first flexi bend. You may have to cut a small piece off the end in the airbox at an angle for the best fit.
I did this to my EL engine in my EB, with excellent results through the midrange to top end. Before After This is the EL Airbox Lid and the EF Airbox Lid Cheers BenJ

With my airbox lid i unbolted those bolts and took that part where the pipe connects into, and had the 3" pipe going into that and from the inside of the lid i expanded the 3" pipe untill it was tight

Thanks guys. I've been talking about doing some mods for ages now but I'm trying to finally get some stuff done to it. I will be lookin at doing some major mods when i upgrade licence in a while. I'm lookin to get a head haul-over and possibly turbo but for now i"m just exploring the minor possibilities such as exhaust, cam, intake and if possible maybe some upgrade with the ECU if possible. Any suggestions for gain in performance but low cost would be much appreciated. Cheers Guys

best basic/beginning mods:
-Exhaust ~$200 -Air Intake ~$100 -3:45 LSD Diff ~$300(good price) -Cam ~$300+/-$50 for shims & timing gear that's about a grand with some fuel to burn from there you could either continue forth along the N/A path, headwork being the main focus point here along with misc things like extractor and exhaust bends, ducted cold air intake and generally altering things that will give a few hp gain or you could set your sights on the 600nm+ of torque provided by almost any turbo on an i6. you can get away with ~$2500 for a turbo kit or shell out the big bones for some big smiles IMO N/A is a waste of time. Dev5 kits from JMM are what $5000 for an honest 150rwkws? pfft $5000 on turbo bits would see your local skyline 'crew' trumatised |
