How do you test the efficiency of a battery, the cluster display
reads here and slowly goes to halfway and then drops to 10 and the up to a "quarter". \/ (10 _ _ _ _ _ 16 ) meanwhile the car has next to no punch, coughs, splutters and acts like it is missing but runs fine once the guage gets to the middle and then s**t again when it goes to the "quarter" mark. I am thinking my battery has a sick cell or my alternator isn't charging correctly. so a how to would be could. I have a test light and a Supercheap multimetre in hand ready to test (in ther morn) cheers geoff

Battery joints usually test your s**t for free.
With the car running you should get 14.4v or there abouts, if you dont your alt is shagged. Car off you shouldnt get less than 12v, else bat is shagged. I assume you know how to use a multimeter? |

I assume you know how to use a multimeter? i thought i knew how to use the multimeter but couldn't figure it out so i went so a drive and got it tested, the battery is fine from what i seen the alternator car started 12.50 and then slowly went up and after like 30 or so seconds it was 13.75 didn't see it get any higher.

Okay I think my alternator is shagged, f**k, stuffed, rooted. got out the multimeter and i 99% i did it right started the car was sitting on 13ish then went to 12 and then after a few seconds it slowly went down to 11. 53 and going done.
walked over to the missus car (EL Falcon) started it up 14.1 and turned her lights on with high beam went down to 14 and stayed. So should i get the Alt Reco'd or new or Second hand?

Buy a brand new one is your best bet.Also is there power steering fluid leaking onto your alternator??IF SO..I would fix that before you get a new alternator,if you dont fix this it wont be too long before you will be replacing another alternator.The oil leaks into the alternators and shorts them out very common from EA to BF.
