Hello all, I have problem starting and running my 89 EA, I used to work at Ford and have replaced just about every thing that can be replaced, the engine is also been rebuilt, it runs on LPG and ULP.

For a short while it has been konking out on me but I can just start it whilst rolling and it will go again but lately now it stalls all the time and backfires badly, until it blew it's rear muffler open, so I cut of the exhaust from the first muffler, so now it only has the cat and a small muffler after that then the pipe ends halfway under the car, the car runs ok for a while until it gets hot, and then konks out, this only seems to happen when the engine gets hot, once it gets hot then konks out, I can't start it again until it cools right down....I will be driving along, the engine runs fine, then all of the sudden it will surge and maybe backfire then konks out, then it won't start at all, it turns over still but won't fire, when it does this I am not sure if it gives a spark I tried with a screw driver in one lead and put it against the block, but could not see a spark jump though...., like I said before it only seems to do this once it get hot, other than that it runs fine and does not miss a beat, it has a new: dizzy, leads, plugs, alternator, power steering pressure switch, aircon compressor, coolant, all oils, rear house extension seal, brake pads and front rotors, plus the engine was rebuilt just before I got it, I dont know what else it could be....... or could it be the MAP sensor??? I tried running the car with it unpluged and it did not make a difference... any ideas what could be causing this.. thank you
Aaron

Sounds like it is the module on the distributor.

Thanks mate, how would I test that, because the distributer including its module is all brand new, less than 6 months old, any other ideas at all...

thank you, aaron.

No worries I will test it, however the coils new aswell as every thing I mentioned, but it could of stuffed up too I supposse....
with what my cars doing, do you think it could be the coil?? it only becomes problematic once the engine gets hot?? other than that the car will start fine and run fine, until it gets hot the problems start....I realy hope its something simple, I don't want to spend alot of money one it, as I have an XR8 I am doing up and need the money for that, but however I drive far for work and need the EA because its a 6 and on gas.....

thank you

Hi if you have a second hand coil or module or the old ones you replaced fit them up to see if it makes a difference. There the only the electrical items I can think of that could cause that problem.

No mate I don't have the old ones any more, but how would I know if it is an electrical fault causing this??
well I think if it is mechanical it would not start at all, I only have a problem once the engine is hot...

not sure what else I could do, I live way out in the sticks, no mechanic will travel that far and will cost far too much to tow, more than the car is worth.....

It's located on the thermostate housing, it is the larger of the two, and is closest to the front of the car.. the sensor has a resistance that varies with the element temperature, I dont know the resistance range that the sensor uses, you may be able to find out through ford.. and simply test it with a multimeter..

OK mate, I found it but before I could test it I just unpluged it and the car still had the same problem, by unplugging it, do you think that would eliminate that as a problem, or would that cause the problem, as if its running like crap because that sensor has faulted causing the car to think it IS unplugged??

I am still yet to test it once I find my multimetre and find it range, however the car does run rather hot at best, and won't tow a trailer because it get far too hot, but just to drive, it gets hot, the very high end of NORMAL, as per an EA temp guage.

there also is another one of those same looking sensors on the back of the engines intake manifold under the air cleaner/throttle body set up, near cyclinder 6, well cyclinder 6's air intake, whats that?? after wards, I unpluged that too, and no difference, I even unpluged both at the same time, still no difference, however on all occasions in which the sensors were unpluged, I still got a temp reading on my temp guage? is that right???

thank you
