You need a frequency switch. Try jaycar for a kit. You can use the auto shift signal since that will only tell you when the auto is going to shift, not when you should shift!

A Convienient tach output is located in the diagnostic plug near the fuses.

AutoSpeed http://www.autospeed.com have a couple on offer. The frequency switch is a kit you put together yourself or the ChipTorque Xede High Intensity Shift Light just needs to be installed:

Frequency Switch

Our Price: Aust $ $35.95
US$27.68
Buy It
Free delivery within
Australia for orders over $200!

Ref: High Performance Electronic Projects for Cars - Silicon Chip Publications.
This is a great module which can be adapted to suit a range of different applications. It uses a standard tacho, road speed, or many other pulse outputs to switch a relay. The switch frequency can be set to trip when it is rising or falling, and it features adjustable hysteresis (the difference between trigger on/off frequency). You could configure it to trigger water spray cooling on deceleration, shift light activation, adjustable aerodynamics based on speed, intake manifold switching and much more. Kit supplied with PCB, and all electronic components.
High Performance Electronic Projects for Cars book is available for purchase here Project/Kit Books

Part Number: KC5378

Or this is a complete one that you just install:

ChipTorque Xede High Intensity Shift Light

Our Price: Aust $ $59.95
US$46.16

These shift lights are equally easy to install as they are to use.

After hooking up to power, ground and a tacho signal (from your ECU), just rev your motor to the desired RPM and press the button. Thats it! The light will come on whenever you reach that RPM.

It can be reset an infinite number of times to allow for different driving conditions.

Installation instructions included.

I was able to score one of these shift light for my bday not long ago, think they bout $180aud (u have to get em from nz i think).
its a awsome light, its dual stage first middle light comes on to tell u to get ready to shift then the outer ring of lights come on when to shift, theres only 2 buttons as well to set the shift points. had it fitted in bout 30mins, just have to tap into a few cables behind ya dash. The only thing is its really bright cos its made up of 7 leds, and well they are pointing right at ya face. :D

If ya want a pic of it installed tell me and ill sus one out
