Gents,
My girl is heading to Umina to see one of her friends either this week or next and i thought to myself, "How can I make the GPS easier to use for her instead of it falling off the windscreen at the wrong time." My brother and I brainstormed and since I broke the suction cap off the bracket over the weekend I figured lets make something happen. Another down side to mounting it was running the power cable from the cigarette ligher to the unit itself. We solved both issues. Since buying the TOMTOM I have always looked at the panel above the air con vents in the middle of the car. Since this is a curved surface however the suction cap would never stick successfully. First, we mounted the plastic bracket to which the suction cap USED to be affixed to, to the panel. I bought plastic glue from Coles, $6. We took the cap that pivots off the bracket, and drilled a while for the power cable to come through. A hole was also drilled into the panel to allow for the cable to be hidden away and only what cable is needed sticks out. All said and done, I think it's nice and tidy now. Folded away, not in use. Extended out, no GPS. In use, how it looks when vehicle in motion. I am pretty proud of myself considering most times I attempt to fabricate something I break something else which is very important and usually has nothing to do with what I am doing initially. Now the girl doesn't have to worry about the suction cap letting go.

Yeah, there is nothing worse than not getting any suction
Well done mate looks good, although are you worried that some d***head thief will know there may be a gps in the car and smash the window looking for it?

I have glass replacement without payment of excess on my insurance so if it happens it will get fixed with minimal fuss. I'll just purchase another centre plate and have to come up with another less permanent idea later.

I havent had problems with suction either. The subs dont make it come loose either although it bounces alot. My Garmin unit came with a lil disc thing that sticks to the dash and that allows you to stick the suction cup to it on uneven surfaces
