welll no its not alright ( from the epa's view) as the cat heats up the gases to burn them more efficiently giving better emissions. people "punch out" their cats which is removing all the inner (honeycomb) looking stuff. but keeping the outer casing so if the epa look under the car it looks like the cat is still there. but doing this means giving a hollow burrr sound like an echo if you understand what i mean. to fix this problem people also sleeve the cat (putting a pipe in between the cat) so its straight through but with the cat outer. looking again like a stock item. 600.00 seems a bit steep who quoted u that. mine was done for 320.00 fitted.

i have also heard a few differant fines for this, i think there is a differance for a company to individual.

but a quick troll around google, brought up the $10,000 fine.

2 things to note,
-highflow cats are not expensive (VERY cheap when you consider the fine.
-they sound funky

but that said it is super rare to hear somone getting done by it, but it does happen.

Yeah i heard that its 10g in qld.
A mate at work got caught running methanol in his turbo 13b rx3 coupe 2g fine a grand per cylinder apparently in his case 2g cause twin rotor. Any way if you get caught without a cat ask the cop whether he wants you on your knees. Or over the bonnet with your pants down cause you'll be getting it sweet

They Transport Department guys use an Infra-red thermometer to tell if the CAT is hollow or not. If the CAT is hollow, lookin at about 250dgs, if its proper, about 450 to 600dgs.

why wouldn't you run one? Apart fom having to pay for one in the first place?

The decrease of restriction isn't worth the fine or the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons emitted from your exhaust as a result of not running one.

Mate i meant $600 to $10,000 for the fine!!! not a quote to get it fitted

Yeh mines is there its just hollow  i think i may get a hi flow cat sound like a good idea although it worries me cos ive just had my car flashed tune without a cat, so if i put one in im goin lose performance? Hope not

You will lose performance but it shouldn't be too noticable and the affect on your tune should be negligable. Just buy a good quality cat and compare cfm's first....don't just got by a manufacturer claiming its "high flow"

there was an article in an import mag putting a de-cat pipe and cutted cat in an R34 skyline, gutting the cat lost 3awkw and putting a decat pipe only gained 2awkw, and that was on a car with over 270kw at all 4 wheels, so i doubt a 200cpsi cat would loose much power over no cat on a falcon.

$10 grand sounds about right.

I have to agree with those who have said you should have one.

Get a good quality cat and youll be fine. Old mate with the R34 on the dyno showed theres bugger all gain by punching it out.

Other option, if you dont want to run a cat ... get a 'Pre-Pollution' car. While you still have emission targets, they are loose (high HC's high CO high CO2 and so on) depending on the year of the car.

Thats not what they do or how they work.

They break NOX (oxides of nitrogen, NO1 NO2 and so on) in to nitrogen and oxygen,
the oxygen is then used to convert CO into CO2, the oxygen is also used to burn off HC (unburnt fuel) Instead of having NOX, CO, HC from the exhaust we have 'LESS' harmful N, CO2 and a smaller amount of HC

early cats were '2way' in that they could not break the NOX. in order to work they needed air injection into the exhaust, this is were the oxygen came from to to convert the CO and to burn HC
I is just as bad to have the air injection system disconnected. if the air injection system is not working the car should be fitted with a 3way cat.

later cats are 3way, they can break the NOX and in doing so 'create their own oxygen'

Hey 4got to say why i hollowed my cat out. Back in 2007 i when i put my pacemakers, you know how you have to alter the cat. I cut it, shut it and dropped!! Oh Crap!! i cracked the 'honeycomb' innards, i had to drive to work the next day so put it in  Took it for a drive after i put the pacmakers on and i thought the pacies were crap as it made no difference. Drove it for a few weeks till took it to my mechanic mate for a new rear seal, he had the exhaust off so i had a look. Sure enuff it was blocked, couldnt c daylight thru it, my mate thru my the screwdriver n yeh. No turning back. Car went heaps better without the cat (pacies helped).

Yeh im gettin around to putting a Hi-flow in
