Im looking at this EF XR6 and the owner mentioned that if the car sits for a week that when it first starts the lifters are a a tad noisy but then after a few seconds u dont hear them.
So how much would it cost to replace them including labour these days?

Yeah that sounds perfectly normal and there's no point replacing the lifters, save your money! To answer your question though you can pick up a set of 12 lifters for $132 at Bursons and I've been quoted around 1-2 hours of labour time but depends where you go, expect maybe $100 in labour.

Yeh thats not bad and not expensive to replace them either if they need to.

ford charge $60 for EACH lifter, places like Repco will find some aftermarket ones for $200.
put it this way, for a 12 year old car, the lifters will be the least of your worries that will fail & need replacing. Stuff like brake booster, alternator, power steering pump, fuel pump, brakes, headgasket..... are all random things in eseries like to fail with age. im lucky though, my car has only done 165,000km and the headgasket has been the only thing that has needed fixing, up until a couple days ago the rear elec window stopped working though.... The XR6 im looking at has just under 140,000kms and is a pretty good car
When do headgaskets usually let go?

mine started leaking at 150,000km, others have found the original gasket to last +220,000km.
in my opinion its worth changing it to an AU item, and machine the head for more compression just as a preventative measure and a nice boost in power. Mine was dyno'd at 110kw with an auto, mild cam, and small gasket leak at number 5 cylinder. after a head shave, AU gasket, and manual conversion with the same cam it made 138kw. The car felt completely different. |

Yeh ive read AU head gasket is the way to go. Is the AU head gasket the same as EF/EL gasket except that its a better material used?

Au gasket is made up of 3 metallic(?) layers. Its thinner than the normal gasket, more durable, and according to "tickford 6" it can possibly raise compression from the standard 9.3 up to 9.8:1

So just replacing the head gasket to AU it will raise the comp that much? or with a 10thou of the head as well?

I actually just had my lifters and head gasket replaced on my EF XR6 a few months ago after it started leaking. I had the AU gasket put on. It required a tad of mod-work fitting it. I think a little grinding not 100%
It does give it a tad more kick if the right fuel is going through it, as in not the crap from safeway. Responds really well to higher octane fuel now, even though i cant afford it lol... The lifters definately did have a fair tick in them for a week or two after the work, but you cant hear a thing now. Runs great, even better than i did before all of the dramas. |

If the tapping subsides after a couple seconds its normal as the lifters pump up - if it does it while driving/under acceleration etc its more of an issue
However not necessarily the lifters - could be a case of carbon deposits causing 'sticky valves' only way to check that though is manual tunrover - just what and see if they stick..
