- Did not want to hijack the other thread for EF/EL, I believe this boxcar thread is a good idea -
Just a quick overview of what I understand at the momment 1/ I got my EA Series II at 280,000 and had to replace the gasket at 285,000 (and head as it got hot and cracked). I do not know if it was done again earlier. I also understood this issue was common for Series I EA's (or pretty much 3.9's) for them to fail around 100,000. All good this is just part of history.. 2/ I am looking at an ED XR6 tomorrow with approx 320,000. The current owner hasn't had the gasket done in his ownership, but I haven't asked him at what km he obtained it. What I want to know is, was the Tickford 4.0L in these ED's renouned for any similar issues? Is it a safe bet this would have had headgasket trouble at some point? Also, who here has an ED XR6? |

I had an ED XR6, had 206xxxkm's when i got it, 217xxx when i smashed it, but yes, they are prone to the same failures as any other Pre Hybrid EL E-Series

Cheers for clearing this up guys, guess EA's were still more prone to doing it?
I went and saw this ED, the paint is actually in worse nic than mine, so I lost interest. Took it for a drive, and it did feel really smooth compared to my EA engine. There's nothing wrong with my donk, it goes very hard, and would easy smash this XR6. My car feels rougher than this ED, the ED even starts and sounds newer - like an EF or something later model. The ED needed a new rear axle, bonnet paint, r/h/f guard paint, plus the quad headlight surround was cracked. The guy had smashed one of the rims, I was wondering if the housing was stuffed.. all fixable, but I kno, but still. I wasn't looking for a car, just saw this, and fact the price had dropped heaps over the last month, thought I might have found a bargain! But.. too much hassle, and I'm very happy with my EA, only let down is the paint. |

If and when you do the head i would pretty much be surethe jackets will need to be welded, and the head skimmed. While your at it get the valves reseated and the guides replaced.
