mrmivec69,you do it to try and reduce the amount of temperature in the radiator as the auto cooler sits in the end tank of the radiator.
Fairmont1, as far as a decent size cooler for the falcon auto box, just go to supercheap or similar and buy a V8 auto cooler, bout the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Are you looking for screw fittings the same as what currently exist on your car or are you coing to hose clamp the new cooler in?

I think its an interesting subject because of course the external trans cooler will heat up the air that then passes through the radiator, so the benefit to the coolant temps won't be clear cut. Also, the trans cooler inside the rad tank being a water-to-oil cooler is very efficient. Maybe a large trans cooler could somehow be fitted behind one of the thermo fans? Just an idea.
Consider also that a three core radiator will provide both lower coolant temps and lower trans oil temps.

Put the biggerst trans cooler you can fit it won't hurt. Also a good idea is a 3 core radiator, they are fantastic, i know i've got one.

I just went through this, i contacted a very experienced convertor/trans company and they advised me that running a stand alone cooler on a street car will result in lower temps but the downside is that the oil takes longer to get up to temp and causes undue wear on the trans when cold which in my eyes is very bad.
When the trans cooler runs inline with the radiator it does a perfect job of cooling the oil and quite sufficient for a street car which is why i ran my after market cooler inline. The trans guy told me that all of his race cars run stand alone but normally street cars dont. If you are cooking your oil even with a decent cooler maybe you need a cooler with an electric thermo fan built into it, derale do these.

Another thing is that in the event of your radiator f**k up you don't end up with tranny fluid all through your coolant which after a few minutes of driving will be hot as a f**k....In my first car this happened and ended up killing one of the hoses (which were old anyway).
I ran two of the smaller pwr coolers in my last car (turbo).
