That stupid bit of rubber is actually called a retainer and its there for a reason, to retain the lifters in the rocker arms.
Cheers but i worked out my problem was just trying to use an e series cam and rocker gear on an au head(the geometry is wrong)it doesnt work, there was no problem with the lifters.
