Hey, have a 97 el fairmont auto.. just randomly dies when driving.. after it dies it still has spark, and i've replaced the fuel pump and reg thinking it was a fuel issue.. but to no avail. It'll stay this way for about +10 or so min, keeps turning over but no start.. then when you can start it again, you drive for about 5min then dies again.. Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks Jack.

How strong is the spark after the motor cuts out? If it's very weak it may be the TFI module?? on the dizzy is breaking down under heat. But generally when they fail you have no PIP signal, so no fire from the coil, therefore no spark....

When it cuts out can you hear the fuel pump prime, should be able to hear it when ign is switched on. If not I would be checking the green fuel pump relay under the coolant tank.

Weird thing thou is it still has spark when it dies.. as soon as it died we checked 2 of the leads and there was more then enough spark, but still wouldn't start for another 5-10 min..

Replace the distributor. When it cuts out, check for injection pulse.I bet you dont have any. This is controlled by the inside module in the distributor.
The outside is for the spark and inside is the fuel. Its easier to replace the distributor with a new item instead of pulling out your old one and stripping it down to replace the module inside.

But first check for injection pulse if it isnt there i would say that it would be the dizzy.Just check it a couple of times to be sure.

Pretty common on a falcon for the dizzy to play up.

If you have a good working spare dizzy when it does play up,remove the airbox, then disconnect the plug off the memcal and plug in the other dizzy, earth the base of the dizzy assembly and then have the ignition on and turn the gear of the distributor.

By doing this you will see and hear if you have injection pulse. Also it would be handy to have a noid light or test light bridged between one of the injector plugs.

This will also determine if it is infact the memcal playing up in the distributor.(Fuel)

I'm still thinking it could be a dizzy problem.Pitty you cant get your hands onto a good working second hand dizzy to try.

Is this a common problem or an intermittent fault?

I think they are the same.I couldnt see why not.Make sure you have the engine set at number 1 on compression and that when you take out the distributor it will be on the finish mark and then when you go to put it in start on the start and then it will end up on the finish. These markings are on the spacer plate. Also take note of which direction the memcal in pointing towards.

Also when refitting the distributor, apply some lubricant to the shaft which slides into the block. The distributor will only go so far because it will get caught up on the oil pump drive gear,so you will need a hand from a friend to slightly tap the key while you hold pressure on the distributor base so that it will mesh in,and hopeing it will not jump a tooth.
