Just wondering where anyone who does their own spraying got their compressor from?
I'm looking at getting into doing some spray painting, eventually building up to doing my car. i have done a bit of research and from what i can tell i need at least 12cfm but preferably 15. Any hints or tips i might need as well while looking? |

15cfm MIN!!!
and get a belt drive direct drives struggle big time most 15cfm compressors will run off 10amp house hold supply just be sure to check if it is a 10A or 15A plug or u could go hell hard core and get a 3phase compressor and run anything off it  like a rattle gun

Yeah anythin from 15cfm and up will be sweet for spraying. I use a three phase compressor but only cause that's what we have in the shed.

yeah i'm going to be limited to a 10 amp single phase one.
where did you guys get yours from? Everything i'm looking at so far is around the $1000 mark, which is a lot!

I'm not sure, I have a feeling ours came from some trade place as it was used at my old man's shop for ages before it was brought up here.

so i havent given up on the idea, and i stumbled across this the other day

total tools in sa have a 17cfm for around $680, 60 litre tank, twin cast cylinders, 3hp motor, 15amp but i just made an adapter

That A/C would be hopeless for spraying a car at less than 5CFM unless you intend to use an airbrush. I own a 12cfm twin cyl belt drive unit that I bought over 20 yrs ago for around $600 and it's sprayed many an auto over the years. I have a few air tools that I run just fine from the A/C because at home in the garage I only ever undo a few bolts at a time so theres plenty of time for the A/C to recharge. All I can add is, if you intend to set up a home workshop, spend the money on quality tolls and equipment. They'll last for years and won't let you down at the worst possible moment

My current compressor is a 15cfm, and it copes with spray painting fine, but big rattle guns big it a bit of hell.

okay, i figured that one was a bit to smallit was just how it said it was rated to 12 cfm.
i will keep scouting around for something that does around 15. |

funny i have just been looking at these in the last few days myself, finally decided to go and pick myself up one for working on the car and eventually painting it.

Here's some useful (or useless) information to consider.
When I took my single cylinder McMillan in for repairs, I found that these days the compressors below $700 are probably Chinese or Taiwanese. They're are OK for the odd job but wear out quicker. The better ones have pumps made in Italy (or somewhere in Europe). A twin cylinder belt drive is quieter, runs at about half the speed of a single, and pumps more air. So, $1000 is in the ballpark for a quality compressor.
