hey, i have an ed xr6 falcon which tends to blow some blue smoke under heavier acceleration. The head gasket has just been done and the valve seals replaced at the same time, yet the smoke appears to be worse now than it was previously. The engine has done about 220k k's also. just seeing if anyone has any ideas why it's doing this and how to correct it. cheers

Did you scrape the carbon off the tops of the pistons when you scraped the old gasket off?

thicker oil. 30/70w will stop it. but change oil every 5000kms for best results thats what ive found.

So its burning oil. Probably just worn rings or something similar.
I'm surprised its that bad after 220k, normally the y last better than that. Must have been thrashed s**t. |

Yes, You have broken the "carbon seal" when you clean up the tops of the pistons - All engines will do it regardless of KM's. Use thicker grade oil for a while & hopefully it will reseal itself over time. When you do a head gasket, just clean the gasket surfaces only & you shouldn't have a problem. Why does it do it? ??? I was told at Tech not to do it - i've kept to that rule & never had a problem. But have heard lots of stories about people that haven't! |

hrmmm ok, makes sense, although it had blown blue smoke before but that was only on one ocasion (it's a lot worse now!:P). But that begs the qestion why don't new cars blow blue smoke as they would have clean piston heads?

New engines use oil too during the running in process - But they will blow heaps of smoke if the rings haven't bedded in properly. It's the same if you re-ring an engine & don't deglaze the bore - Oil consumption & smoke. Everything has to bed in together. You could always pull it out,de-glaze & throw a new set of rings in it if it don't settle down again. |
