I too would change it......
Not for any technical reason, but I like things to be as they were always intended...... for that reason, I would use the factory earth!!!

You can use the original earth wire, I have done so and haven't had problems. Though I think it is recommended to use the supplied earth wire with the washer type end. The shorter the earth the better...though I am not sure as to why. I think if it's a Pioneer head unit and the proper earth is not used, then the amplification of the internal amp of the HU may not work at it's full potential...but that is just a total guess.

Ahhhh, well its earthed to the second din bolt at the moment, (with washer type end) and is working great. But, are there any signs I should keep an eye (or ear) out for that would tell me that its not earthed properly?

The major sign will be no power! Other signs will/could be engine noise (whining) through the system...... Highly doubt you'll have any issues tho mate.....

the longer the length of cable to more losses occur. as with a hose, the bigger hose can flow more water, and the longer the hose, the more internal friction between the water and the wall of the hose - meaning more loss. In electrical systems its obviously not wall friction, but it is still friction losses within the cable. so basically: short, fat cables lose less power |

hammer a 3ft copper rod into the ground and connect a 4500km cable to it and it should get you to perth and back. If you do not know anything that basic you should not be stuffing with it.
