G'day people;
I just wanted to know whether there is an easy way of inspecting whether any of the weights have fallen off the tailshaft of my EBII Falcon? Also, if possible, is anyone able to provide/upload a photo of their EB tailshaft so I can identify whether any of mine have fallen off? Regards. |

Hmmm, so that brown-circular section is a missing weight... Do you have any form of vibration at higher speed as a result of the missing weight?
Also, am I able to grab one from a wrecker? If so, how would you affix it? With some form of glue?? Thanks for your help mate! |

Wreckers wont have balance weights, they are spot welded to the tube. Going by the diameter its about a 0.20 Oz balance weight. You can either have it re-balanced or purchase a second hand one the same (steel) or an alloy the same length from a wreckers.

I took a closer look at both the pics from you and cjh and came across something. I dont think they were balance weights there but more like a sticker. Notice they are the same diameter spot on both shafts, also they are both on the rear of shaft. Another thing is that there is no trace of spot weld marks (see pic attached) Also Bassfreaks pic there is already a balance weight on the rear of shaft but 180 deg from the spot (see pic attached) I can find out from work what may have been there but from what i see it wasnt a balance weight. If it was a balance weight it would be a significant weight going by the diameter and if was missing especially on the rear you would notice a vibration for sure at speeds over 80km/h

Thats why it came off, wasn't done properly
 ....just like the rear windscreens in the EA to ED models aren't glued in properly either.

I dont think you get what im saying. I dont believe it was an actual balance weight there as there is no sign of spot marks on both driveshaft. To remove these balance weights a cold chisel and hammer is required. If it was a poor weld adhesion it would have failed during its final balance cycle let alone 10 years later. Seeing the driveshaft was made where i work but over 10 years ago i will find out if we applied any stickers before painting. If we did it may have been to show the light side after balancing so it can be found after painting. The light side is dotted in yellow to line up with the heavy side of the diff flange. This process still applies today on the F series.

Ok, confimed at work today that the 3" steel driveshafts that were painted had a dot sticker applied prior to paint. This is to make it visible after painting for marking a dot with a yellow marker. This yellow dot represents the lighter side of imbalance after balancing and lines up with the heavy side of the mating component. I have attached pics of the actual balance weights used on these driveshafts and they clearly show the 3 dimples that spot weld to the tube. In pics of both driveshafts there ar no sign of spot marks from these dimples at all. So it would be a waste of time and money having the driveshaft(s) balanced as no balance weights have fallen off.
