Greetings & help,

I'm not a mechanic. I have a ford fairlane Ghia V8 yr 2000. Auto.have 188,000kms.
Have taken the vehicle to Ford Service centres to repair 3 problems. $5,000 later the problems remain.

1. The Oil gauge when in idle (at traffic lights) drops to the red marker..alarms go off. NOT always! They replaced oil pump & switch. big two day job. Was OK for a couple of weeks.

2. When I stop again at traffic lights, the car shudders as if petrol starved. By holding my foot on the brake & pressing down on the accelerator the problem goes away.

Incidently the oil gauge also responds when the revs are increased....

have mentioned this to the Service managers...........!

3. Last issue ..when I drop the gear lever from Drive to say 3rd , 2nd or 1st gear.........nothing happens! The indicater shows that the lever has dropped to 2nd, 3rd whatever then within a few moments pops back to 'D' & then disappears altogether..........I bring it back to 'D' & the indicator shows 'D'.

While in drive mode say at 60km/hr I drop to 3rd gear....nothing happens etc!

I'm bewildered that the FORD service centre is unable to fix these irritating problems.....

What do I do???

Any advice is welcomed

Firstly anyone that takes two f**k days to change an oil pressure sender is NOT TO BE TRUSTED WITH ANYTHING!
5K to not fix something......I'd be demanding my money back!
The gauge problems sound like bad grounding but it could also be the cause of all the other problems. You can check grounds using a digital multimeter. You want a reading of zero ohms between block and battery negative but the grounds from the dash and EEC also need checking.
Are there any non-standard electronic items on board? Often poor installation of these can cause major problems. I once found a problem on an ED XR8 where some moron had tapped into the number 2 injector drive wire for power to a device instead of tapping into injector power itself!?!...the poor guy had paid $2800 to three different auto electricians to not fix it.
BTW have these Ford dealers given you the fault codes from your EEC?

Have you had the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge? I know AUs had an issue with grounding causing erratic oil pressure readings but yours sounds like it may be an actual pressure issue.

at 60km/h your gearbox will still be in 3rd, even when in drive.
