How much oil does the 4.0 hold? I have been told that it is recommended you put 5.5 litres in......Can anyone let me know if this is correct please?

I just chuck 5L in, in addition to a couple hundred mL in the oil filter - that usually fills it up (then I have a bit for top ups).
The sump capacity inc. filter is 5.5L, but there's always a bit of oil left in there anyways... Try 5L, and if that doesn't do the trick get another 500mL bottle... You don't want to overfill it though. |

why not put 5 litres in, start the motor, let it run for 30 seconds, turn motor off, wait 5 mins, check dipstick for oil level and add till it reaches the top?
After you add the oil, wait 30 seconds before rechecking the dipstick so the new oil has had time to flow down and settle in the sump. |

5L is heaps tho, it sucks having to buy 2 lots of 5L just to get that extra half
helps having an R31 syline around that takes 4.5L tho :p but yeh, wack the 5L in, run it for a bit, and just check it and top up if necessary, there could be up to half a L left int he sump when you drain it anyway.

Also depends on how long you let the oil drain out of the sump and also how warm the engine is. The warmer the oil the more oil will flow out of the heads, also wheather you change the filter but yeah i agree with everyone else about 5.5litres including filter.

Old wives tale - As long as you've had the engine to full operating temperature WHEN you switch it off for an oil change and given it enough time for all the oil to drain into the sump (at least an hour), you can do it in 6 months after turning the car off and you'll get the same amount of oil out, as long as you give it enough time to drain out. No extra oil will come come out of the head or any part of the motor if its all in the sump already I also park the car on a slight angle to ensure the sump plug is the lowest part of the motor, this eliminates a flat spot in the sump where a little oil can pool and remain in the motor. Dont park it on too big an angle, something like 10 degrees is all thats needed, if on a flat surface, a brick under one wheel for example. I always add about 200ml of fresh oil to the motor when changing the oil, it helps wash away some of the old oil still clinging to the walls of the sump and motor. Its not that bad having to buy an extra bottle of oil, simply put a date on it with a permanent marker and store it until the next oil change is due. I tend to buy oil in bulk (4 or 5 containers) when repco or bursons is having a 30% off sale.... |
