Yes you do need it otherwise the tweeter wont work. Its a bi-polar capacitor and its job is to take out the low and mid frequencies to the tweeter. If there is no bass across the 2 speakres ensure the polarities are correct to each speaker. If they are reversed on 1 side the speakers will be out of phase and reducing the bass.

As joolz said, it's a cross-over that filters out low/mid frequencies to give a nice crisp sound. Try his suggestion of swapping plugs over on the terminals too, I put speakers in the rear of my EL and had the same thing. Changed them around and got it right and they sound really good now - for stockers anyway. Certainly nothing like the full competition range setup in my EF

Easiest way to check for out of phase is to move the balance from one side to the middle.. if the middle has less bass than the one side.. swap the wires around.
When I did this stuff for a job, this was the number one thing we found home fitters had done to their cars. (number two was using the illumination wire from the factory deck as a negative because that's how it tested..... because the parkers were off when they tested) Was funny seeing them come in with no parking lights because it kept blowing fuses when they turned them on. good stuff. |
