speedyED get that tensioner released before you drive the car again. Im surpised that you havnt snapped every chain guide by now !!! (unless you have already )
you will also have to remove the rocker cover and see if the tensioner is sitting against the chain guide properly |

TROYMAN wrote: thats good news mate. atleast you got another one thats the main thing.. i got a few pics just incase your not sure. you need something like this to release the tensioner from its compressed position once it has been fitted.. its a long reach 3mm allen key with a 12mm tube. Attachment: DSC01316.JPG to release it you need to fit the tensioner in the compressed position and fit the large outer part of the tensioner bolt.(with the centre bolt removed) once its tight you insert the steel tube and allen key into the centre together and push in and rotate it anti clock wise and the tensioner will release puting tension back on the cam chain.. then you put the centre bolt back in and your back in buisnes...... this is what the complete tensioner looks like in its compressed position(no tension) Attachment: DSC01318.JPG this is what it looks like in its released position.. Attachment: DSC01321.JPG this it what it looks like disassembled.. Attachment: DSC01322.JPG hope this helps??? You bet it helps! Thanks mate, you're an absolute legend. I had the same problem as speedy, when I tried to undo the centre bolt, the whole kit'n'kaboodle came out. Will need to get hold of one of those special tools, to keep the outer bolt in position for future reference. Cheers mate, you've saved my bacon yet again

For those that have been following my dilema with with the timing chain tensioner, I found this nifty little tool when I was at supercheap this arvo picking up a long shaft allen key set.
It fit's the outer bolt perfectly....will need a little adjustment made to it for the final tightening of the bolt as it hits the step out section of the block where the power steering pump bolts up, because of it's square shape....nothing the dremel can't fix . Cost a whole $15. Attachment: I feel a tech doco comin on

ok so seems to be a few heads in here that know about the tensioner...
i used this walkthrough to do mine - http://autofix.com.au/blog/archives/622 now i undid the outer bit, and it all came out sweet, then i put the allen key in to do the next part, twisted it clockwise, then wounter clockwise, but it basically came out before i realised what was happening... now im left with this have i done something wrong, or do i need to do anything further? or am i ok to attempt installation once i do my head gasket? it seemed too easy getting it out and has me worried lol or is it getting it back in thats the problem?

You've done well mate! That's how it should look when you remove it. That's in the closed poition, when you go to put it back in, you will feel it "pop out" when it is released to the open/tensioned position.
Don't ya just love the colour of the oil when it turns to mud Mick

lol phew!
i thought i f**k it up i only had a 3mm allen key, didnt have the tube on the outside or anything, just stuck it in felt around and hoped for the best! all in all getting the gear out for the head gasket change hasnt been as hard as i had thought, not saying its easy, but i had a much bigger idea of how hard it would be, but i know im going to hate the install! and yes, muddy oil, yum yum lol

When you come to fitting it back in, you will need a tube as described above to help release the tensioner. Another tip I will pass on is that there is a little oil filter located inside the outer bolt that needs to be removed so that you can fit a 12mm tube into the hole, then when it's all done just slip the filter back in before fitting the centre bolt.
Cheers, Mick
