Hi,
Ok recently I noticed oil leaking from the gearbox as the plug was loose.. I was unsure how much oil I had lost so I decided to just change it. The workshop manual suggests Castrol Syntrans B which has proven an impossible task to obtain unless I want to purchase a barrel from Castrol direct. (No thanks!) Anyways I went to so many ford dealers/workshops who said *Oh its the same gearbox as the early EA-EF which I know is a load of bull**** and I'd end up with a broken gearbox after a few thousand kms. So I had a chat to a guy at repco who dissapeared for a while and suggested SAF-XA which is a diff oil. He said its a varient of Syntrans B and should do the same job. Turns out it doesnt!!! changed it a few days ago. Gear shifts are so HARSH... They dont just push in with a bit of resistance anymore, I can actually feel the gears crunching.. When the gearbox is cold it sometimes wont even go into second unless I force it. HELP!!!! What do you guys recommend?? Anyone here (Goldcoast area) know any working oil types and willing to change it for me. And how much?

I'm pretty sure any dextron III auto fluid is ok for the BW/Tremec T5, with the friction modifier additive.
I'm currently using penrite Manual Gear Oil 75, which is specifically designed for the T5, with the additive already in it. The other I've read a lot about is Castrol Transmax auto fluid. This one requires the additive too. |

You can use Castrol Transmax Z......it isn't cheap....about 20 odd bucks a litre.

The Castrol SAF-XA was $30 a litre what a waste!!
I'm very interested in the Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75. With the Dextron III or Transmax Z, Isn't the additive extremely expensive?

Are you sure about Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75?
The PDF for Penrite Manual Gear Oil 70 seems more specifically designed for the gearbox. http://www.penrite.com.au/files/EW3TGZ8 ... L%2070.pdf

The advise you got was corect it does run the same fluid as e-series and au boxes, Def go the penrite gear oil. however I fear you may be putting this fluid in one to flush and a secont time on a short interval to replace.
Cross your fingers your syncros are not rooted.

It just confuses me that I hear so many stories from different people saying this person is right this person is wrong the sump capacity is totally different etc. etc.
I found a PDF PEN421 Lube Book v2.indd Falcon BA, Fairlane, Fairmont, LTD , XR 4.0L Turbo 2002-2005 HPR 5/SIN 0 7.0 SIN Gear Oil 75 2.0 So you were right, the 75 looks like a good mix.

As above, it's still a borgy T5 if it's a 6.
The 8s had the tremec box. The penrite 70 is for the T56, which is the 6 speed introduced with BA MKII, not the T5.

Nah, the Lubrizol for Dex III is less than $10 for the 150ml bottles (made by penrite) - only thing is that it is a bit difficult to find - my local Autopro has it.The forum search engine is shyte, so try these too: http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&a ... afe=images

I have No idea why a person would suggest a diff oil for a gearbox.
Castrol SAF-XA is FAR too thick for a gearbox. Transmax-Z is the way, or Redline shockproof light. however i prefer penrite extra-light.

The reason the gears were grating while changing is that the oil is too thick to get out of the synchro hubs quick enough. The synchro rings are like little brakes, so that the hub can match speeds of the different shafts/gear sets.

You will need to flush it too, id recomend changing it atleast twice to get that diff oil out of there.
Id be surprised if you havnt caused some damage... Drain it, and then refill it with Dextron III, go for a 10-15km drive, drain it again. Then refill it with Transmax Z. That Penrite gear oil is still too thick for the T5, id tried running it once in my ED and I could barely shift (it was winter at the time) Transmax Z made a hell of a difference.

I had Redline Light Shock and Microglide, a my shifts were always smooth and precise.. despite quick shifts, and loaded clutches
I HIGHLY recommend Redline
