Hey all,
As a newbie to car stuff and likeing my car to look good, I was wondering how does one go about cleaning the engine bay? What to use, where to and not to spray, engine temp etc. Basiclly I would like a shining clean bay like some but atm I am to scare to wet it incase I do damage. Thx in advance. Not sure if this was to right forum, but it stated anything to make your car look good LN

When the engine is cold i spray degreaser all over the shop.
Give it bit of a scrub, and wassh it off then when its dry again (or ive dried it) i spray vinyl protector (amerall type s**t) over every thing, wait a lil bit and wipe it off. Seems to do the job ok Someone told e they just spray everythin with CRC (afetr degreasing)... or was it clr.. f**k i dunno, and it disperses all the water and makes everythin look shiney

Last time I washed my engine, water got into the coil and destroyed it. Mechanic has since told me that they always cover the coil & dizzy with a plastic bag to prevent any problems. Funny thing though I never had this problem with my EA, same coil in 6 years and I use to wash the engine a couple of times a year.

In the GLI i usually leave the motor running and gerni it down.No probs.Today I didn't leave it running and washed it. Well it was a bit embarrassing pushing the Falc out of Carlovers.Keep the water away from dizzy as much as possible. At home I use a good quality degreaser (cheaper in 5 L from chemical shop) but don't leave it on the motor or paint long as some of them are caustic. It helps if the car is in the shade. Clean a bit at a time.Put the car up on ramps and degrease all underneath the engine as well.

Geez, i would never clean under the bonnet with any high pressure hose. I leave the thing running, spray degreaser on the parts i want to clean, then just have a trickle coming out of the hose to wash it off. If you high opressure hose it, it will more than likely get into all of the your elelctronics, like the plugs and so on.
Try not to have too much water sitting by the spark plugs of course too, the car will run like a b**ch for a few minutes until it evaporates, but still. Dave |

being an EF it wont have a dizzy to worry about wetting..
at work i always just spray everything with degreaser, and than hose it all off, and use an air blower to blow the air away from the plugs etc... |

LN Dizzy = distributor not to worry for you as you own a EF, EFs don't have one they use a coil pack. You only need to use degreaser if the engine is real dirty with oil and grease. I usually just use detergent and a karcher, as I said, use to wash my EA twice a year without any problems. Always washed it when cold, engine off never point the pressure washer directly at any electrical parts such as altenator, coil etc. Plugs are not so much of a problem as long as you let motor dry off before starting. Only had one problem and that was with my EL when the coil died, this happens when there is a crack in the coil casing, water gets inside the coil. As my mechanic has advised me, best to cover coil/coilpack with plactic bag before washing down any engine.

WD40 is a very decent light-duty degreaser.
