it can make a big difference in some engines and not in others. probably not as much in an older engine.

Basically if the ignition system is stock and in good nick then there's really no need to deviate from the recommended gap. In most cases, if you go to somewhere like repco and ask for plugs for your specific car, they'll give you the right heat rating and they'll be pre gapped... never hurts to double check the pre gapped plugs tho.
Too small a gap and the spark with be too small/weak... too large a gap and it may not fire properly (i.e. misfire). Only really need to start f@rt around with gap for upgraded ignition systems, forced induction etc.
