Had the car for a few weeks now and it seems to have pretty poor grip. For example in the wet under extremely light throttle a slight corner can kick the rear wheels out..
Car is a 94 EF Ghia (no tickford options, single spinner) on FTR 16's with decent tread, cars ride height seems high aswell. Is there anything in particular i should be checking out?

Decent tyres.. and the correct pressure, use a gauge, not the servo. Last track day I went to I was lazy and checked pumped the tyres up to 45psi at BP on the way. First hard lap the car felt a bit funny then coming onto the pit straight the back end of the car just let go and round she went. Went into the pits and checked tyre pressures and there was 52psi in the rears! Back down to a correct 45psi and much better.

See if you can just get some super lows for the back just to level the car out, mine was the same until I dropped the back down. Feels heaps more stable and smoothe, and makes the car look so much better.

Same with my ghia, slips real easy... I blame the cheap tyres I have, dad's car can take a bit of throttle in the wet... mine takes no throttle at all and I have an LSD so I should have more traction.
I have run mine at 29 psi, 36 psi then 33 psi... nothing helped them. I go to take off quick to get through a small gap in the traffic at an intersection... give it the slightest throttle then it slips up, let go, foot down a bit again, no traction, let go, look at the car heading towards me, put my foot down again... Put some yokohama's off my dads old EA on and now I get a bit of traction in the wet atleast So yeah, mine was slipping easy due to cheap tyres... I cant remember, should tyre pressure be checked when the tyre is hot or cold?? I think it was cold..? |

TYRES
when I got the classic It was ridiculous always spinning the bags without meaning to. I had a terrible time on a particularly nasty intersection in warrandyte south. Nearly got cleaned up as it sat spinning without going forward with a truck bearing down on me. It Also locked up the front brakes a few times with smioke everywhere. Next day it was off to Bob Jane's for a set of real tyres I had enough! I got a wide set of 225/60/R15 Yokies and it was like I had a different car. Handled heaps better and stopped good, no more involuntary burnouts for no reason.

you can have good ammounts of tread but they can still be s**t tyres in the wet, i know before i changed my tyres my EF was a pig in the wet that i was scared enough not to drive it occasionally while raining so change your tyres to some good quality ones like a bridgestone or something after you check all other routes.

Oh yes for the budget concious, I recommend Bridgestone ER30's. I got 225/60/15 and they are 98% as good as the Yokohama's and last more klm, about 60k. I am on my second set and would likely buy them again. Perhaps I will get the ER50's next time. I only paid $115 each last time.

hmm..... "extremely light throttle" will kick the rear end out?
sounds like it has massive amounts of power.... good stuff |

Knackered rear shocks and/or bushs can also make the rear prone to misbehaviour.
