are you 100% sure its going into diagnosic mode when your setting the timing??
if it dont go into diagnotic mode what you think looks right might be retarded by about 20 deg |

hmm if the ecu isnt going into diagnostic mode there might be an issue with the ecu.
here is a clip of an au engine with a el ecu going into diagnostic mode.. nothing really happens in the first min or so but around the 2 min mark this should be happening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY71VHbDOM4 |

its pretty straight forward..
you connect a wire between the top and bottom far left pins on the diagnostic plug, turn the ignition on to reds and after you hear the relays click a second or 2 later you will hear another click this will be the ecu going into self test mode.start the engine and wait the 2 mins and that is what should happen.. as for fuel i normally run premium 95 or 98.. i can run std unleaded but if go cruising to the coast hitting the mountain hills it does ping a little..but the knock sensor usually drops the timing back but it seems to take a few seconds and doesnt seem to control the pinging for long.. so most of the time i run premium... |

i think it performes pretty good for a std xr engine..
it has great pulling power down low and pulls stronger in the higher revs compared to the ed engine |
