HI
I have a EF Falcon with a problem. There has always been a ticking noise under the hood when i got the car, recently it had been getting worse. I replaced the hydraulic lash adjusters today because i thought it was them bleeding out. when i start the car now the noise is there then goes away once normal idle oil pressure is reached (no problem ?). But after a jab on the accelerator the noise is there until the motor returns to idle. I don't know how to check if i replaced the adjusters the right way. I removed the old adjusters with a small punch and pushed the new adjusters in the same way (but first i installed the little shim/washer and put in some clean oil). I would like to know if anyone has run the motor with the rocker cover off, and if anyone has had a similar problem with the noise. I need help ASAP because i am only on holidays for a couple more days. Thanks Michael |

Hi There
What oil / viscosity are you using ?? When you replaced the HLA's did you notice the shim has three slots on one side ?? This has to face the HLA unit on reassembly. As far as you know is the cam standard or an after market job ?? Some reground cams require a thicker shim or an extra standard one to prevent ticking. |

Are you certain it's lifter noise? I thought the same of my car, replaced them, turns out its a problem with the timing chain...

how do i check the timing chain, when i had the cover off it was pretty tight.
the oil i use is 20w-60 i think ( HPR 30). With the lash adjusters i put the side with the one slot to the top (same as removed) and pushed that all the way to the bottom before putting some oil in and installing the piston. |

worn valve guides in the head can cause rattling that sounds like noisy lifters...

Just a suggestion. When you fit the lash adjusters leave the plastic retainer ring off, they dont need to be there and are mainly used to aid installation on the production line, leaving the reatainer off allows the lash adjuster to extend further and take up any slack over satandard. To refit the lash adjusters without the retaining clips you will have to hold them into the rocker, I use masking tape and remove it when the rocker gear is in place, just make sure all the lash adjusters are seated well into the rocker before tightning down the rocker gear or you may crack a rocker, been there done that.
