Local mechanic wants $80 to replace brake fluid. NO WAY.

How do you know if it needs to be done anyway?

I'd do it myself but i'm worried about rooting around with the ABS on my EL Ghia.

Any advice, or link to a 'how do' would be great.

Cheers.

Sounds like an ok deal to me.

Remove all wheels, flush calipers out and refit with new fluid with no air bubbles.

Sure I do this stuff myself, but I've come to the age where its easier to pay some one else to do s**t when I've got my own work to do.

My problem is, I check everything someone else does, I trust nobody when it comes to wheels and brakes.

There are brake fluid flushes and there are brake fluid flushes.
I do it very different to most, including taking off the master cyl res to clean it out.
It can take me about 1 to 2hrs depending on how much trouble I run into, like blocked up bleeder nipples, seized caliper slides, torn dust boots on the slides or the calipers....the list goes on.

do you think the mechanic works for peanuts just to keep the customers happy? He's got bills to pay as well.

$80 sounds MORE than fair in my opinion

well if he is doing his job properly and overhauling the calipers ie changing the seals too then that is not a bad price however if he is just sucking the old fluid out and flushing the system then max $80 thats what i charge the customers and most are happy with that for a basic flush
hope this helps josh

Just have the key on when you bleed it.

Start from the furtherest away from the ABS module and move to the closest wheel by wheel. In an E-Series with ABS, Drivers Rear -> Passengers Rear -> Drivers Front -> Passengers Front. In an AU/BA/BF/FG, Passengers Rear -> Drivers Rear -> Passengers Front -> Drivers Front.
