Hey guys i have an auto ef mont that has an annoying taxi cab whine out of first gear, PoweredByCNG said it's the torque convertor in my other thread so i thought i'd post here and see if that's the case and if anyone knows if there's a way to quieten the noise?
Cheers, Pat

It's the planetary a*** that causes the noise - The only way to quieten it is to replace it. Quite a lot of EF - AU a*** were replaced under warranty when the cars were new due to that noise - yours is one that slipped through that warranty period.

You have to replace the planetary, the primary & secondary sungears & the ring gear - The box has to be fully stripped to change them & they are expensive! You could use a a*** out of another box, but with the labour involved, it would be cheaper to fit a low KM secondhand box.

that seems to be the most common idea whenever something craps itself in the BTR
unless you can do the work yourself, it simply costs too much to get someone to strip the box fault finding, and replacing parts...... as opposed to fitting a 2nd hand gearbox that works (for the time being ) |

yeah - just drive it till it s**t itself than change the box, even though they wind, they sometimes still go for another x0,000 km's

well dont put the 4.11's in then !!
behind a manual i personally wouldnt go higher than 3.73 with an EA T5, or 3.9 with EBII box |

Haha it was a toss up between the 4.11's and and a manual and seeing as the gearbox seems to have seen better days i will go the manual route... just not sure how much i should be looking to pay at wreckers for a manual and all the gear to go with it
