Gday

Just after some peoples' informed opinions. With tax time coming up (and a nice healthy return in the works) im after some advice on whether fitting the XR with the F6 intake and exhaust systems is worth it. I'm not really looking for more power but I would like it to be more responsive when I put my foot down.

I've been thinking of getting the intake for a while and will definitely be getting it when I get my money back but i'd like to know what the complete typhoon exhaust is likely to set me back and whether it's worth it or is there an aftermarket setup which would be better.

I want the car to remain legal so the exhaust needs to be ADR compliant. Also i'd prefer it to not be significantly louder then the stock exhaust i've got at the moment. Don't mind a bit of a rumble but definitely dont want a cop magnet slung under my car.

I doubt you will feel any real difference.

I'm looking to just get a bit more response when you give the accelerator a tap so power gain isn't really an issue but i've heard getting the air and exhaust gas flow right can help in the throttle response department so i'm just after a bit of advice on whether anybody has used these stock parts and seen any difference in the throttle.

F6 intake, are you talking about that light air duct that leads into the bottom of the airbox from behind the headlight? If so, make one up yourself, FordFreak made one up out of some EA falcon intake tubes (cfi models) and it was a fair bit larger than the F6 one, for a fraction of the cost of the F6 one and worked to the same effect, probably even better because of it being larger. Im not 100% sure on this, but most NA XR6's ive seen, had the smaller intake snorkel's like the ones on the base model BA XT's. If this is the case upgrade to a BA XR6T snorkel as they are a bit bigger.

As for the exhaust, i really dont know if the F6 one would be worth it, especially if its second hand. If you can get one cheap then by all means, go for it, but there are off the shelf catback exhausts for the XR6's you can get brand new, should give you a bit more response, possibly a tad more response than the F6 exhaust, and will give it a deeper different note. Id go for a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust probably with one muffler and a rear resonator. Shouldnt be too loud i would think. The intake and exhaust mods should help it breathe a little better

better response can be had by putting in some 3.45:1 ratio diff gears from an xr6, along with the speedo gear to correct your dash.

some mandrel bent extractors would do more than a 2.5 inch exhaust.

yep kwikxr... cost me $10 for the two rubber necks... nothing to chop them... almost doubled the size by joinging them horizonatally.. and installed it myself cutting a hole in the standard airbox...

extractors.. 2.5 inch cat back... and cold air induction will help the engine rev out faster and gain a fraction in power and economy...

I think i'm still going to go with the typhoon airbox and upper air intake option (i want the engine bay to look tidy and factory and my plastic working skills are pretty average) but will go aftermarket on the exhaust side. Can anyone recommend a good place in newcastle or the central coast?

I'm thinking extractors and 2.5" cat back like freak says.

As something to think about for the future is there any merit in what Grimketel said about using the turbo's diff in the standard XR6 (ZF option). I've heard that all the ZF box I6's had the same diffs anyway, anyone confirm?

ZF 6's got 2.73:1 diff gears, same for the XR8. you cannot change the speedo gear in the B series, They don't have one, ABS Sync sensors pick up wheel speed

Didnt see your ride description, I was going off your pic lol. Probably wont need higher diff ratio as the ZF is supposed to have pretty good gear ratio's. Maybe get a set of 3.08:1's from a 4 speed falcon just to give it a bit more perk, but Im not sure it will need it, never experienced a ZF. Pretty sure a BF 6cyl with ZF did a 14.5 pass in a sydney morning herald test drive, so thats pretty good for a 1600kg+ car.

Changing diff ratio is definately a good way to go if you have a 4 speed auto, really helps them respond.

definately get the typhoon secondary intake, bigger snorkel and air filter, it will make a noticable difference...

the XR6T/Typhoon exhausts are 2 x 2.25", equivalent to more than a 3" single pipe (could going that size send it backwards? maybe someone can clarify that for chewie)

but in saying that ive seen complete 2nd hand systems go for $50 on ebay, bargain...

I had a typhoon Exhaust on my NA 6... sounded ok, performed ok. But i made better power of of my 2.5" redback.

Sold the complete exhaust system for $120.

Cheers

one muffler and one res ? are you joking ? he wants it NOT to sound like a p00ftr f4rt!

i've also considered this myself but theres got to be a reason that people sell their second hand ones so cheap, i guess it's coz they aren't suitable for an na car. people seem to stick to effective bargains like shyte to a blanket driving prices up.

dunno bout stock systems but i've got extractors, h/f cat, 2.5'' press bent m/s system with one muffler, one 'hot dog' and one res and the res got put on for rego and i'm thankful it did. sounded nice before but just plain annoying on long drives. would be twice as bad with an auto.
still sounds significant just not over the top.
