I reckon your little drama Mark was caused by the spigot on the torque convertor not being 100% lined up with the housing in the crank.
Did you push the convertor all the way back and make sure it was sitting square before you bolted the box up? There should be nearly 25mm clearance between the flex plate and the convertor when the convertor is pushed all the way back. Then you can line up the threads in the convertor to the holes by eye and gently pull the convertor forward to the flex plate through the inspection cover and offer it up nice and square. That is how I have done it on all the auto boxes I have changed before and never had an issue.

Having trouble though, it seems it wont go back all the way for some reason. The spigot at the end of the convertor is still protruding by 10 or so mm. |

10 points to EVL098 for the right advice. Now the auto is in properly. Now for a real barstool of a job, the auto coolant lines to the radiator.

The installation of the lines sucks serious balls.
Start from the rear and feed them through from the gearbox end. It will be the only way you can get them in. Have fun.........NOT

Well here are a few more photos of my progress:
Another view of the cleaned up auto: Whilst I had the dash out, I found that my recirc/fresh air mechanism was cactus. I drilled a hole and screwed in a self tapper into it. Hopefully that will fix it: The finished interior, now with a T bar: I had to wire in a DL V8 transmission control unit into a EF Fairmont wiring loom. These are pretty much non compatible and this was probably the hardest task until..... Those wretched auto cooling lines. One had a small crack in it where I pushed my luck trying to straighten it out more. The crack is right between the passenger side engine mount and the sump. Basically the hardest area to access the pipe. What I ended up doing for a temporary fix was to slide a piece of rubber hose and then clamp the hose over the leak. Hopefully that will do the job for a while. Tomorrow is test drive day.... |

my old EA had hose connections for the cooler lines. never had a leak from it at all. i dont think you will have a problem with it.

Wow! T5 to Auto - well done I say (from an Auto proponent )
Quote: A quick question here too. Where does the bracket for the brake switch go on the EL pedal box. I'm lost here?? Did you find an answer to this question already? The EL brake switch hangs off the pin that the booster connects to. It's a funny looking thing. They are are around $25.00 from Autopro. There is a funny looking T shaped plug that connects to it. Cheers RD

Righto, this morning at the crack of dawn I topped up the auto and started the motor. There are nil leaks, happy days. I continued to put more castrol fluid down the dipstick tube but I found it difficult to get a good accurate reading.
I then took it for a spin around the block. I gave the car a little press of the throttle up the street and was duly reminded of how the BTR gearing sucks but I'll take it for a proper drive once I do the learn idle procedure. The car settles into a very nice cammy idle that is even better than when I had the manual in it and this is before I have played with the TPS etc. So much for me trying to fool this DL ECU.(The ED ECU was easier to fool). According the Ford workshop manual, the 97LE has a torque convertor that operates in the 2000-2400rpm range. Sometimes my car stalls when I pop it into reverse, but I'll see how this all goes once I tune the idle and do the learn procedure for the TCM. So far, so good. I've been at this, off and on since Sunday and I'm relieved at the outcome. |

When I went to the wreckers looking for a bracket, they told me what you said and that the switches are pretty bodgy and don't last that long. |

Nice work mate, but now yours will be just as sluggish as mine on take-off....still bugs the s**t outta me. Good for cruising though
What happened to the wife's XR? Not happy with that anymore?

After a day of driving here and there I'm convinced that it was the right move. The auto is nothing like the old T5 in terms of 'brutal' acceleration off the line but will be good for towing and the missus. I'm happy with the result but it will need a 3.45 diff for a better launch.
Yeah Mick, the wife still drives the BA V8 but it has a hydraulic clutch making it easier on her. I'll do some performance launches on the weekend and see if it goes any quicker or if it will burn rubber off the line |

Well happy days here. I've been collecting bits and pieces for my long awaited dual exhaust system. So far I have got two Supercat 2.5' straight through mufflers and 6 metres of 2.5' ACMS exhaust pipe. I have to go to the wreckers and get some clamps, rubber and steel hangers and then some heat shielding so I can route some pipe around to the passenger side under the fuel filler hose on the wagon. I'll be going for a custom X pipe then into a muffler on each bank with an option of either dumping at the diff or going all the way through to a pipe with stainless tip on either side of the rear bumper just like they did in the 70s.
I have to get this done as it's rego time and the old Redback system is rotting inside out. Pictures coming soon. |

Excellent.
When you have got the left side all worked out, make two please. LOL Oh, and can you please remind me what size lowering blocks you used in the back of your wagon? I think I need to go lower now. I have 1.5s at the moment. BenJ
