PHEW!!! Nice and HOT today!!!
I joined the AFF boys and girls for a Mixed Ford Cruise this morning, starting at Windsor, across to Galston Gorge, and then up the Pacific Highway to Gosford. Had a great run, and was the only Boxcar, and the only Wagon on the cruise. I am pleased to report that I was able to keep up with the V8 crowd on the straights and through the twisty bits. Here are a couple of pics I took at Scheyville National Park. Another 20 or so cars met us at Gosford. ******************************************************* As usual, an issue arose on the cruise. This time was a complete loss of power steering assistance at idle rpm. And I now have a nice 'wur' from the pump. It does still steer fine at rpm over 1000 but is whiney. While I think this is a pump failure, as there is plenty of fluid in the system, I was wondering if high oil temp might have been the cause. It was hot out this morning and the steering got a good workout at high rpms through Galston Gorge and up the Pacific Hwy. On the EB there is no PWR Steer oil cooling system. Late EDs seem to have a small cooler mounted to the front K Frame crossmember, and EF/ELs have a cooler pipe across the front of the radiator. As I have converted the Wagon to a Manual Box, I was thinking that I could make use of the transmission cooler part of the radiator, to cool the pwr steering fluid. Any thoughts on if this will be effective or not? I also have a factory external auto cooler rad, that I could mount up. Please post up any ideas that you have. Cheers BenJ

hey ben, i just picked up a EF motor and has the little cooler with it, if you can source an EF, EL one with brackets i believe it will work alot better then the radiator one. tho for now there wont be any halm in using the radiator and its easy to remove when you get a cooler attached

i would use an external cooler ben.. as the radiator temp is close to 90-100 deg c which is ok for an auto box,
but i dont think the powersteering would get that hot? (maybe on an extreme hot day) atleast with the external cooler it has the potential to keep it much cooler than the 90 deg radiator.. |

Certainly nothing to loose from running the power steering fluid through a cooler.
I still have the power steer on the Mav running through a cooler from when I had the big tyres on it. The steering fluid used to nearly boil without it on a tricky section. I just used an old auto cooler I had laying around. By the way the Newcastle-Sydney courier boat has some bits for you in it................

hey BenJ, im having the same issue with my power steering, its a dog under 1000rpm and whines alot esp cornering hard. i think i gave it a hard time a few months ago at my mates property in the mud, basically i think i overheated the heck out of it and now the pump seems like it has low compression or something

also ben, if you position it correctly the thermo fans will feed cold air through it when stationary... so should help once you stop after a hill climb

As you already have a cooler of sorts on the powersteering, the looped pipe at the front of the condensor, I will agree with Troyman and say to use a small auto cooler instead off using the radiator. I believe you will find this much more efficient.

I believe you will find this much more efficient. Unfortunately, the EB does not have that pipe, or ANY cooling at all. Just the pressure line and the return line between the pump and rack, right next to the extractors of course. The good news is that this morning, after a night of cooling off, the power steering seemed to be fine. Low speed assistance was like normal, with no unusual noises. It would seem to me that it got overly hot yesterday, and the system would benefit greatly with the addition of an external cooler. I will start figuring that out after work today. Thanks all for your replies and suggestions. Cheers BenJ

Just use an auto tranny cooler in the return line to the pump. Dead easy to do. Besides the cooler doing its thing , you will get close to an extra litre of oil in the system to dissapate heat better.

Hi BenJ,
why not use the factory ford EF/EL ghia tranny cooler? get the whole thing brackets and all and it'll look nice and factory and it's not overly large.. also you can probably get one really cheap or free. |
