BenJ wrote: Got a bit of motivation last week. I did this mod on my Red EB Sedan, and it was one of the first mods I attempted to do on the Wagon, well over a year ago now, but gave up on it quickly due to the position of the LPG gas filler. I am of course yapping on about the flush fuel flap mod. For those that don't know, EA-ED Sedans and Wagons and EF and EL1 Wagons have a fuel flap made of plastic with a raised section designed for your finger to pull open the flap. This is necessary on the early EA-ED base model cars as they did not have a remote fuel flap release fitted. The Fairmonts and Fairlanes however did, the finger pull was not needed. With the introduction of the EF sedan the fuel flap was made of metal and the finger pull was deleted leaving a nice clean flat fuel flap. The wagons however, being the same as the early cars in the back end, still had the old plastic fuel flap with the finger pull. The EF/EL sedan fuel flap is NOT a direct bolt in to an EA-ED sedan or wagon. It is however possible to swap the hinge from the EA-ED plastic flap, and install it on the EF/EL sedan metal flap, mod the catch and give you that nice smooth clean look. An even easier method is to locate the fuel flap from an EL11 Wagon, as these cars have the smooth metal flap with the early type hinge already installed from factory. These DO bolt straight in, making things much easier. These EL11 flaps however, don't have the mounting bracket for the Fuel Flap Ajar sensor. Now the history lesson is over, and you are realising the amount of trivial E Series crap floating through the large expanse between my ears, it is time go get on with some pics etc. Hi Ben, A quick question on this mod. Do you know if the EF sedan filler flap is a straight swap for the EF wagons? Cos that is a nice, yet very subtle mod I'd like to try on mine. Thanks, Euan

As per the quote.
The sedan lid goes onto the wagon hinge assy. The catch needs to be bent more straighter, and filed a little to help the soleniod rod to engage it.

I know I seem to harp on about the brakes at lot but weight was mentioned and I realize that is probably my biggest issue.
To me my wagons have always been workhorses. Whether carrying tools and parts or towing a trailer or ferrying the family on holiday. I always have extra kilo's on board. It is probably likely that I am trying to stop an extra 750-1000kg of load compared to a standard empty car. Combine this with very heavy traffic or downhill runs and brake fade and shudder begins to occur. Shudder is my biggest hate and something that I constantly have to contend with. I replace the discs, service the calipers, flush the fluid... all great for a few months...... then slowly almost imperceptibly the peddal starts to shudder, the steering wheel wobbles until after a few more weeks or months it really gives you the s**t. I have been driving these cars for 16 years so I have been fixing the brakes for a long long time. anyway enough of that. I love the wheels, they were on my shortlist when I bought the Directors for the EL wagon (RIP)11 years ago. one look at the LED strips and I clicked "buy it now" myself, great idea for the cargo bay. I will see if I can find some clear tube or perspex for them. Cheers, Richard

I too have replaced the rotors twice in the last two years, but I just can't justify (or find) the large amounts of coin needed to do the job right. No need for the perspex. The way they are made means they are completely water proof. They are enclosed in a flexible rubber compound. Surprisingly, after the hot weather we have had here, the double sided tape is still stuck LOL. Cheers BenJ

Great, so just hook them up to 12V an switch on! awesome. Maybe I will buy some more for other projects.
I know the brakes upgrades cannot be justified. I had been toying with the idea of fitting 4 spots to the standard discs like the Jaguar's have. They had the same size discs as did BMW 7 series. I even bought a set of BMW calipers from the wreckers. I just haven't gotten around to making up the necessary suspension knuckles yet. I have spares so I just need to get busy machining brackets for a trial. I have a mate who is a Jag man and he says the S2 Jag brakes are great.

Looking good! lots a light there in the back!
i was thinking about doing something like this for the boot in my EF, im guessing the basics still apply. Attach the LED strip to the Positive and ground where the old light used to go? |

Air Conditioning = FAIL
Well, the A/C worked well on Friday. Then it didn't. Over the weekend the air got so it was just at ambient temp, which was rather hot here in Sydney. I took it back to the A/C place and they checked it out and found that the compressor had leaked the gas out. They did do a Vacuum pull down on Thursday and it tested OK. This compressor was an unknown quantity, so I am not surprised. After getting the verdict I went to Pick N Payless and found an EL with the A/C system still gassed and grabbed the A/C compressor out of that. I have fitted it to the wagon. As usual nothing goes to plan. That stupid 10mm bolt that holds the pipes to the compressor wouldn't budge and ended up being rounded. Only solution was to grab the dremel and a cutting disc, and remove the head of the bolt. Not easy in such a confined space but I got it done. Will report back tomorrow after it gets gassed up again. Cheers BenJ

As it is different every day, I would suggest asking as you go in to be sure. LOL. Cheers BenJ

Air Conditioning = WIN?
Went back to the A/C place this afternoon, and they re-gassed the Wagon. Seemed to work as expected this afternoon, but time will tell. The Wagon is just about prepped for our QLD trip. Just have to check the oil, water, pwr steer, brake fluids etc on Saturday, then head off early Sunday Morning. I also have to add in a 12v socket to the cargo area for a little 12v fridge we are taking along. Cheers BenJ
