I would say the CV and centre bearing are from a commonwhore. I have used plenty of the 100mm cv's and centre bearings in lots of different oddball applications. Cheap, easy to get/fix, and easy to fit. The GM cv will take quite bit of grunt, some V8 supercars used that set up a while ago... 8-)

Hey Ben i currently have a nc fairlane 5 litre. have converted the dash over to a nl fairlane i am still running nc original loom and computer and currently have everything working except the temp sender. was just wondering what i need to do to fire up the temp sender as i believe the el/nl gets a signal from computer and has no input on the dash. so at the moment my temp sender wire from the original eb/nc loom is just floating behind the cluster. Just wondering if you know what i need to do to rectify the situation your help would be appreciated cheers Lewy

Hi.

I installed the EL 4.0L ECU which has the data line needed.

I am not up to speed on the interchangeablity of V8 ECUs so I don't know if you could run a later model ECU in your NC.

Sorry I couldn't be of any more assistance.

Cheers
BenJ

Starter Motor - Spare Diff

Thought I would give you all a quick update.

I scored an EL Wagon diff off eBay for $30. It was in Wollongong, so after initially deciding I could load it in the Wagon on my own, being the tuff guy I am LOL, I was persuaded by SWC to swing by his place on the way and pick up him, and his trailer.

I get up early on Saturday morning, to drop off my family at their various appointments before heading to SWC's place. Out to the car to start it and, get a short half hearted wind on the starter motor, followed by a bunch of clicks, then ZIP, NADA, Zilch!

Bugger!

With the help of the wife and kids we get the wagon pointing down the street and I am able to successfully clutch start it, even though it was stone cold. Sweet!

Reflecting back during the previous week, I had noticed the starter had been a bit reluctant first thing in the mornings, and had intended to try and sort it out over the weekend, but it beat me to it. At least it is a manual and could be clutch started.

So I get down to SWC's with no dramas, and I park on the street with a small incline. We test the starter and get absolutely nothing. Oh, well. A quick roll down the hill, pop the clutch and the wagon purs back into life.

We hook up the trailer, without turning it off hehe, and we head off to Wollonong.

The GPS points us to the address, and I reverse in the drive. SWC reminded me to leave it idling, as it is an automatic reaction to turn the car off when you stop. He just didn't want to push I think.

I walk around the back of the house with the seller. I am thinking about how far SWC and I are going to have to carry this bloody diff, as they are not the lightest items around. The seller shows me the diff, and what do you know, it has two 15" steel wheels on it, and they come with the diff.

Bonus!!! And I was able to just push the diff back up to the car. Too Easy!

So for $30 + $20 LPG, I get a complete EL wagon 3.23 diff, disc to disc, including calipers, and the rims. I call that a good deal.

I drop SWC off at his place and get home with no issues.

Snap is visiting again, and we get to work on the starter problem. We pull the relay and check it is operating correctly, as well as check that power is getting to the starter solenoid. All checks out OK, and we agree it has to be a dud starter motor.

I had bought a BA starter motor for $25 around six months ago. The BA starter motors are half the physical size of the Eseries ones, and have 1.5 times the torque. Easy choice to install it really.

We test the BA starter motor out of the car, and it operates fine. 30mins later the old starter motor is out and the new one is in. A quick test of the old one showed it was stuffed, as expected.

The wagon now starts super easy every time.

BA starter motor into Eseries, highly recommended.

Cheers
BenJ

LOL, no way will I put a lokka in.

I have the ED Ghia sedan diff which has a 3.23 LSD in it. The plan is to swap the centre into the wagon diff. While the LSD centre is out it will get a quick cone adjustment to tighten it up.

Thanks for the kind words. Most of the reason I update the thread is to show just what can be done, and that it is all achievable in your driveway.

Inspiration for the rest of us to be doing it in our driveways!

Nicely done on the BA starter motor, I will keep that in mind when I run out of my supply of E series starters!

Cheers

If I, with busted back, can get full diff (with brake rotors still on) out a car at Pick-A-Part and 150m to my wagon and into the back with all my usual kitchen sink, kids bikes and tools in there to argue the point... Well... SWC and a trailer? Dude...!

Wish I had SWC and a trailer.....
