Wow, that looks like a lot of work there Ben! Glad to see it's running on petrol. LPG Operation can't be far off.

Cheers

Have you got the details of the seller Ben?
It would be interesting to see if there were any options for the mighty 5.0.

do you think they would be any good for turbo or supercharged application with a "little more high flowing" of the injectors with the drill maybe ?

I did ask the seller this, but with just one Pressure Regulator, there is no point. In addition you will loose some of the finer flow control at low RPM if you open them up too far.

Also the hose end of the jet is already 4mm, and drilling it out further would harm the integrity of the jet.

Cheers

LPG Injection - Installation Part 4

Next Sunday

The following day after I got the car running on petrol, I had to be at Fox Studios at 6am. I was lucky enough to be selected as an Extra on the movie, 'The Great Gatsby'. Having already done six days over the previous couple of weeks, I knew what to expect in terms of free time. There would be none for the next four days. In fact, on the last day of the shoot, Friday, I started at 9.15am and we finished at 12.30am on Saturday Morning.

I had family commitments Saturday Morning and helped a buddy move house that afternoon.

So Sunday was the day to get the Injection System functioning. I had however found a bit of time on Saturday to remove the Petrol Intercept Bypass wires and plugged the loom back into the LPG ECU. The car started and ran as per normal on petrol fully connected to the LPG ECU.

Win! I now knew the LPG ECU should function correctly.

A photo of the engine bay assembled with all the gear. At this point the wiring is not complete and some of it is just connected to check things worked. Ignore the blue wire as it is the jury rigged power supply for the coil.

Once I tidy it all up, it will look quite unobtrusive.

On Sunday Morning, after the start of Bathurst, I was able to spend some time playing with the software while connected to the LPG ECU. I will get some pics of the software in action at a later date.

The instructions do have the needed information, but it is a bit hard to follow at times. I will re write them in plain English at some point.

I was able to apply the initial settings without much fuss. Switch over points to LPG were set as, 50 degrees water temp, and 1500 rpm. These are the recommended settings.

It really does help if you do follow what instructions you do have, as I found out the hard way. I missed one simple instruction and uploaded a DAT file while in the wrong setting. Snap had uploaded some base files supplied to him by the seller, and I used one of these as an initial configuration. The car did start and idle after I did this, but under any load it would miss and piss f@rt around.

Not happy, I went back inside and studied the instructions again. I identified my error and went back out to try again. This time I elected to use a file Snap had left me of his second tune when he installed this kit on his EL.

All went well, and the engine started as expected on Petrol, and switched easily over to LPG. This time, there are no issues at all and the engine ran and revved smoothly. Excellent!!!

It is now Tuesday, and I have now driven over 100kms on LPG, to work and back in peak our traffic for two days, + running around for the family.

The tune currently being used is for a std six, with extractors. I have not tried to do a self learn at this stage, but do intend to. The car, at the moment, drives and behaves much like it did on LPG with the IMPCO gear. The bottom end is stronger, but hunts a bit on idle when not at operating temp. This can be fixed by making the idle mix a bit richer.

Initial testing gives much promise to an unnoticeable transition under load from LPG to Petrol. I will be exploring this possibility.

The next phase is to create an LPG Tune that will have the car perform at a similar level as the petrol fuel.

If this proves unattainable with the current hardware, I will consider if keeping the LPG as an economic choice, and use a flick over to petrol for the performance aspect will be a better final solution.

After all, one of the main benefits of this kit is that the mixer is removed from the intake, and should provide major benefits to both fuel options.

I have run the switch wire into the cabin and wired it up to a sedan trunk release button. I also hooked up the 'Economy' light to be on when the LPG system is on and active. The fuel gauge is not corrected from the old IMPCO setup yet and only indicates petrol levels for now. I will be removing all of the IMPCO control gear shortly and I think I will design a manual switch for the fuel gauge that defaults to LPG and allows to flick a switch to see what the petrol level is. The car has to be turned on and off between the change of tank choices to reflect an accurate level.

I will provide additional feedback as I progress through the tuning process.

Cheers
BenJ

Nice work! If it's anything like my injection system, 200kw seems to be the limit of the reg & injectors. Having said that, with a 2nd converter, reg & extra injectors, with a custom ecu, more isn't out of the question.

Cheers
