The problem is you guys just don't understand SWC vernacular.

When SWC says to me 'That's Gay'

I know that what he means to say is 'How awesome is that! Your skills with electronics are way beyond my comprehension. Well done for giving it a go and doing a stellar job'.

It is all in the interpretation really.

:D :D   :D :D :P :P

Cheers

So what he is saying is really the opposite, OK when he is saying "That's gay" he is giving you praise, hmm so all what was posted from him that sounded like praise for you, really meant you are "GAY"

No, it is not the opposite.

To ascertain the relative meaning from his initial comment, you need apply a floating variable based on the number 'That's Gay' phrases used on each occasion. It actually has a diminishing return, with no 'That's Gay' being spoken having the highest praise value, and multiple repetitions in one sentence reducing the praise value on a sliding scale.

SWC is quite a complicated fellow really, and I consider myself lucky to be his friend.

No ABS on my car, it was not available in 1991.

HEGO = Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor

BA DOHC 16 - Wiring, Water Temp, Oil Pressure and more

In between work, family duties, a quick trip to QLD to visit my parents, and the rain, I have managed to make some progress.

Oil Pressure Sender

I assembled the oil pressure adapter and fitted it to the block. I blanked off one outlet (held in reserve for turbo feed in the future) the BA Pressure Switch opposite the block fitting and the ED Oil Pressure Sender in the last hole.

Image

As a matter of interest, here is a photo comparing the EF/EL Sender (left) and the EA-ED Sender (right). Not only do they look different, they have a different impedance as well. You have to use the correct sender with the relevant model instrument cluster.

Image

I chose to start with the ED Sender as I will leave the ED dash in place to begin with on the initial start up attempt.

Water Temp Sender

I went for a visit to the local Pirtek outlet with a temp sender and an LPG adapter fitting to find out if I could buy a T piece with two barbs and a thread in the bottom for the sender. The friendly chap at the desk informs me the fitting uses NPT thread, which is not common and is not held in stock. He can however order it in. Using the LPG adaptor as a guide for the barb size the following parts arrived a few days later. The three fittings cost me $35.84.

Image

Assembled.
Image

Knowing I also needed to divert water via the LPG Regulator/Converter I came up with this solution.
Image

Only when I went to assemble the parts and trial fit the assembly to the engine did I realise the barb fittings are one size too small. I will order the correct size, although, I don't think they will leak as they are.

Image

PCM Bracket

On a whim I decided I would trial fit the PCM Bracket into the wagon. I figured with all the LPG gear installed, I had better check everything cleared.

It didn't. But only just. The LPG Map Sensor was fowling on the angled edge by a couple of mm. A quick snip and tuck with the dremel had it all sorted. You can see the cut under the large engine plug.
Image

Wiring Loom

I trial fitted the fabricated wiring loom and the BA Body Loom in the ED together and was able to match up all the required joins. I also designed the relay setup that will trigger the battery power with a 12v Ign signal. I decided to mount the relays where the E Series Map Sensor normal bolted. This location is easily accessible and I will be able to cover them. I am using single pole, double throw relays so each relay when triggered has two outputs. One relay has the coil pack power, and the other, injector power plus the PCM 12v ign wires. This leaves me one spare 12v Ign triggered output for use in the future.

So I went from this
Image

To this

Image

I used a BBM loom plug from an EF for the first join. The fuel pump, HEGO, Signal Return, Power Steering Pressure Switch and the throttle pedal run through this plug and all go to the PCM. The rest I am yet to complete.
Image

I am quite pleased with how the loom is coming together.

More

I have now delivered the spare K Frame and the slotted engine mounts to SWC for some love and care with the welder. The K Frame will have the front bar replaced and moved forward. It will look like factory fitment once completed. The engine mounts, now the final bolt placement has been marked, will be plated and redrilled. This will strengthen the mount holes and prevent any movement of the engine that may occur with the slots as they are.

Over the weekend I also removed the DBA slotted rotors and installed some spare stock rotors. The DBAs are warped again. I am decided if they are worth machining a second time.

I also installed the 4 channel amp I picked up recently. The previous amp, a generous donation, gave up during the week.

Part way during the install.
Image

This time I also hooked up the front speakers to the amp.

Very happy. Much louder. Now need to look for some better front splits LOL.

That is all for now.

Cheers
BenJ

Wow, Pirtek know how to charge don't they. What size are they, 1/2"? We buy the tees for like $3, but that is with a 50% discount and we buy 20 at a time.

Nice update Ben!

Are you going to fabricate a support for the oil senders, say bend up some steel to run from the engine mount bolt hole to the T for the senders, to stop it bouncing around & getting a fatigue crack in it?

Cheers

BA DOHC 17 - Parts Score & Engine Mounts - LPG Tank - Cooling Upgrade + General Update

OK. Where to begin?

Well, eBay once again had some parts I just could not overlook.

Cooling Upgrade

A couple of weeks ago when Snap was visiting, he showed me a new Reservoir Bottle he had purchased off eBay. It looked the goods, so I also got one for myself.

For $45 + postage, I picked mine up as the seller is local, you get a brand spanking new bottle, including the water level sensor rubber o'ring.

I only got time during the week to install it, along with some new coolant of course. Certainly looks better than the old rusty brown one it replaced.

BA DOHC Parts Score & Engine Mounts

Again on eBay last week I found two items at such a low price I couldn't ignore them. In addition the items were a couple of hours drive away in a country location. I was able to win them both for the opening bid.

Image

Now, I know I have adapted E Series parts, but this was mainly due to the fact I didn't have them and the prices asked for them 12 months ago were just beyond me. In addition, at that time getting A/C lines married was an expensive exercise too.

I was able to get the BA Power Steering Pump for $20 and the A/C pump for $30. I will now be able to use the standard BA Serpentine Belt. I also have been assured that getting the BA A/C pipes joined with the E Series pipes is doable for reasonable cost. The BA High Pressure Power Steering line I can get new for $40 and requires a small modification to get it to fit the E Series Steering Rack.

SWC has finished with the engine mounts. After I slotted the bolt holes and was able to lower the engine block to allow the bonnet to shut, advice I received was that no matter how tight I did the bolts up, the torque of the engine would lift the engine within the slot. A quick chat with SWC and a solution was sorted.

SWC welded plates on to the bolt side of the mounts and then drilled new holes in the desired location. I test fitted them today, and they required no adjustment. A quick paint job with some black engine enamel and they are ready to be fitted.

LPG Tank + General Update

I was able to make a deal swapping some NF Fairlane cornering lamps for a LPG Scuba Tank that had just been rechecked and had 10 years on it. My tank is due for testing soon so that worked out very nicely thankyou.

Image

Seeing as the A/C and Pwr Steer pumps were above Newcastle, and the LPG Tank was at the Central Coast, I decided to make a day of it and do a road trip. I picked up Paulmac from Budgewoi on the way up, always good to catch up with great mates, and headed up to Tanilba Bay. Picked up the parts no probs, got a bit of history on them which sounds good, and we had a quiet lunch at Lemon Tree Passage. I dropped off Paulmac and only had to go down the road to get the LPG Tank. After a quick yak it was time to head home.

The Wagon went great. It drove effortlessly along the freeway and was a real pleasure to cruise in. The whole trip totalled 429kms. I filled up the LPG tank before I left and filled it up once home. I used 58Litres of LPG, comprising of approx 70% freeway and 30% city/town driving. The A/C was on for much of the trip, and there were a few power runs done with Paulmac aboard as he was interested in how well the LPG Injection kit performed.

According to my calculations that is 13.5L/100kms, which is not bad for an LPG car.

The weather in Sydney has been annoying and the damp and wet days make it difficult to get any real work done on the wiring. My work area is outside, so just have to grin and bare it.

Hope you are all well.

Cheers
BenJ
