BA DOHC 22 - K Frame + Throttle Pedal

K Frame Mod

Some time ago now, SWC finished modding a spare EB K Frame I had acquired for just this purpose.

A new length of square bar and some 3mm flat plate were acquired for the princely sum of $11 from a local metal supplier.

SWC then carefully ground off the unwanted factory parts, and then fabricated the new parts to mimic the factory design, but moved the square bar forward to allow for the BARRA sump.

This is the factory K Frame.

And this is the modified K Frame
Image

It is fairly untidy and dirty like this. I spent an afternoon with a drill and a wire wheel, cleaned up all the crap off it, and after liberal application of Gloss Black Kill Rust it now looks like this.

The idea is that when this K Frame is in the car it will look like a factory K Frame, and unless you are an E Series enthusiast like myself, and most of you, you would not know the K Frame had been altered.

Here is the freshly prepared K Frame waiting to be installed in its new home.
Image

I plan to go ahead and do the K Frame swap well in advance of the actual BARRA swap. This way I can devote the needed time to cleaning the suspension, replacing grease etc on all the bushes, and installing replacement front struts. Then on BARRA swap day, I can focus just on the conversion and any issues that may arise.

Throttle Pedal

When I first showed pics of my throttle pedal bracket, it was suggested by a few experienced members, that a brace would be a good idea.

Taking on board this advice, I asked SWC to wave his magic welding wand over it, and he was kind enough to oblige.

In addition a threaded rod was installed across the factory bracket to prevent any flexing there too.

After some more Black Kill Rust it looks like this.

Thankfully the sun has come back out, and I will hopefully have another update during the week.

Cheers
BenJ

BA DOHC 23 - Air Con Pipes 2

As indicated in a previous update regarding the Air Con I had been given a contact who can join the BA pipes to the E Series pipes.

After speaking to Steve at Express Auto Electrics he confirmed he was able to assist, and quoted me a price for the job that I thought was very reasonable, and well within reach of enthusiasts like you and me.

Steve instructed me to mark both sides of the pipes with the position of the join along the pipes, and also to mark the orientation of the join.

To do this, I put the BARRA back in the ED Ghia. I had already sourced both of the BA A/C pipes from a wreck and I had cut the pipes as close to the car side as I could to ensure I had enough of the rubber part of the pipes to work with.

Having decided to use EF/EL A/C gear I marked both the E Series and BA pipes and then delivered them to Steve.

I picked up the finished parts during the week.

The joins look great and the fit is just right. I plan to paint the silver connections flat black so they blend in. You can see the white orientation marks I made on the pipes. They will also be cleaned off.

Still working away at things, and I have made a list of odds and ends that need to be done before a test fire.

Cheers
BenJ

Nice update! Something I'd be very interested in if I was to go a DOHC as I'd still want my climate control working....

Keep up the good work Ben!

Cheers

Watch that A/C hose where it goes by the suspension tower 'sticken up' bolts -
maybe put some kind of a plastic protector over the bolt to stop the thread or
the sharp end rubbing on the hose - other carowners will note their hoses go
OVER the bolts, can cause em to rub a hole in the hose, A/C gas lost, sad...
[Incidently, I've often thought what is needed here is a quick disconnect type
connector, suitable for connect-under-pressure, with Double Shut Off, - think
like an industrial version of your garden hose clipon connectors, in metal that
shuts the valving just before the disconnection occurs so no or only the tiniest
whiff of gas escapes...then you could remove the front parts of the A/C out of
the way by just disconnecting a couple of connectors..mmm.. Enzed catalogue
'3800 Quick Couplings' mentions the kinda thing I mean.]
Another point I just remembered is that most A/C units in EB's used a piston
type compressor, whilst EF used a rotary compressor... relevance is that the
piston type when they fail can just seize the piston, whereas in the rotary
type failure can often mean lotsa bits break off the rotary scroll, contaminating
throughout the system-causing a worst level of damage. Mentioned as plenty
people look in this thread for consideratons when they build. Cheers

Hi edwgns.

Thanks for the comments.

Re the upper A/C hose it runs on the inside/engine of the bolts and uses the EF/EL loop that holds the pipe away from the bolts by using the inner front bolt as its locating point.

I currently have an EF/EL A/C compressor in the EB, and the design appears to be the same as the EB2 to ED, just with a longer snout to suit the serpentine belt front dress.

The AU models appear to have a newer design A/C pump, and the BA is similar in appearance, although the pipe mount locations are very different on the BA.

Constructive input such as yours is appreciated, and yes, quick disconnect fittings would be awesome.

Cheers
BenJ

Hello my Friends.

On Tuesday afternoon, my Dad's battle with Cancer ended, far sooner than expected. I was lucky enough to have visited last weekend and had some one on one time with him.

I will miss him.

As a result, yesterday my wife and I drove from Sydney to the QLD Sunshine Coast to be with my family.

Happily, the Wagon performed flawlessly on the drive and I was pleased to note the car used 134 litres of LPG over 1017kms with an average of 13.18 litres per 100 kms. Total spend for the trip was $123 and that included filling the tank again after arriving. Last tank full got 461kms to empty.

Not too bad for a 21 year old car.

Following the funeral next week, I hope to have a little bit of time to catch up with a few mates while I am visiting, but we will see.

BenJ

Sorry to hear about your loss Ben, cancer is unfortunately one of the worst forms of sickness and you don't realise it's severity until you lose somebody close to you !
All the best Ben!
