BA DOHC 29 - It's Alive - Contd

Well, as you can all imagine, I am absolutely stoked.

This stage started Friday week ago with a trip to see Joe at CMS. I dropped off my SCT XCal for Joe to load up the required modified tune to allow the BA PCM run the BARRA in stand alone configuration.

I picked up the completed tune around lunch time on Saturday, but had an errand to run for Mrs BenJ that meant I got back home after dark.

Sunday, I had a mate dropping around so we could set up and LPG Injection Kit on his spare inlet manifold for his BA. Before he arrived, I was able to connect up the fuel lines from the engine to the body, swapped in a new fuel filter, tipped 10 litres of 98 the petrol tank, changed the oil filter, drained a bit over half a litre of oil out of the sump (still a nice colour), and after talking to Joe, used 6.5 liters cheap 15W 40 oil.

Joe also recommended pulling the coils and plugs out for the the crank test, which I also did.

While helping my mate with the LPG gear I managed to get the test cranking done and it was sooo smooth at first I didn't think it worked LOL. So now I had fresh oil pumped around the engine, the plugs and coils went back in. The plugs looked fine and the gap was good. Oh, I also bolted up the exhaust again.

It was now late afternoon on Sunday, and my mate headed home. I grabbed the XCal3 and had my first go at uploading the tune to the BARRA PCM. It went well and sucked out the stock tune as well. It was now dark, and with fingers crossed I tried to start it. The engine cranked, and cranked. Hmmmm. I used the XCal3 to check for error codes and found two. One was a Can Bus error, no surprise there, and a fuel pump relay fail error. DOH! I still had the E Series ECU connected. A quick swap of the fuel pump trigger wires and tried to start it again. Still no go.

It was dark, I was tired, so I elected to pack up and leave it, hoping I would get a away from work early one day during the week.

Well, I didn't get time to look at it again until this morning.

First check was for 12v Ign power at the coils and injectors. Confirmed.

I reconnected the XCal3 and cleared the errors before checking them again. The fuel pump relay error was now gone, with only the Can Bus error still showing.

OK, time to try again.

It cranked, and coughed. Not much but better than before. I tried several more times with the same outcome. I had acquired some new BF model coils, which are apparently a better design than the BA ones, so swapped them in.

A fresh try saw more coughing then it was almost catching.

At my young fellas suggestion, we put some water in the cooling system as I wasn't sure if the BA electronics might be able to determine if it was dry. I did discover I have a water leak from one of the heater hoses though LOL. Something for me to fix tomorrow.

It would try to start, but a soon as I released the key it would die.

One last try with a small bit of throttle and it caught! Whoooo Hoooooo! I slowly released the throttle pedal and it worked out the idle parameters and sat there idling quietly away.

It now starts at the turn of the key and idles easily.

In addition, the ED oil pressure gauge works, the volt meter gauge also works, and the tacho also functions correctly. All good news.

Oh, yes, a stab on the BA throttle pedal results in corresponding action from the engine.

Another check for DTC errors with the XCal3 came back with the A/C system not having gas, and the thermo fans not being connected. Nothing I don't have an answer for.

Sooo, what now?

There are a few things to be done before it can go in the Wagon.

I want to fix all the water leaks so I can get the engine up to operating temp to check the ED temp gauge, and get the thermo fans to run of the BA PCM.

A 3" cat converter will be acquired and fitted to the stock exhaust manifold so it is ready to bolt into the wagon, unless I manage to purchase some extractors first.

I want to get a custom power steering pressure hose made up too. The modded second hand BA one has a small leak.

Then the engine can come out.

I want to paint the block black and a few other bits and pieces will get cleaned up as well. I have a factory turbo sump to install on this engine, and a set of F6 valve springs I should install while it is out of a car.

I also need to remove the inlet manifold so I can drill and tap it for the LPG injection kit and build new mounting brackets for the injector manifolds. This will be the last step and will take some thought and planning as I will have to put the wagon on straight petrol to do this.

The last stage will be to set aside a full weekend for the swap into the wagon. This will include installing the new K Frame so will be quite a big job.

I am very excited that it is now running, and seeing all of my planning and fabrication come to life is very satisfying.

Cheers
BenJ

BA XR Front Bar Freshen + All Ford Day 2012

BA XR Front Bar Freshen

With All Ford Day (AFD) 2012 looming I thought I had better fix the alarmingly large number of stone chips in the front bar. As a daily driver and a jaunt or two to Queensland, the bar does tend to get a bit ratty.

Soo I pulled it off and installed the old stocker bar for a few days.
Image

Funnily enough the original bar doesn't look too far out of place with the rest of the body kit. I did have to take out the BA Washer bottle though as it just doesn't fit with the standard bar.

The weather was crap and threatening to rain, so I decided a quick sand and a rattle can paint job was the best option.

Ready to paint.

Painted!

It came up pretty good considering.

While I had some motivation and the all the gear was out, I also ripped the EB GT flares off and gave them a gloss paint job too. No pics of that process unfortunately.

All Ford Day 2012

Got up bright and early, well early anyway, and met up with the boys and girls attending AFD this year.

The weather was kind to us and with fellow enthusiasts who are great company, we had a great day.

We set up a 12v TV in the back and played a DVD all day which had photos from previous Fordmods events on it. Big thanks to Donna for a great job!

I had quite a few people pass positive comments on the mods I have done, and I was happy to provide more in depth advice when asked.

Seeing as the wagon was looking the best it had for quite some time, I took a few photos for all to enjoy.
