The wagon is looking damn nice there Ben, well done and kudos to you! Isn't it great to A) be on holiday and B) be your own boss as the other half isn't there! :)

I am itching to get on with mine now, hopefully this week will be the starter. Even Rach is looking forward to the end result! I have my immediate work list on the pantry!

Great effort. The car is looking good.
I could have helped you with a diff housing but you are too far away.

I have stripped my fairmont now so I have one stripped and one 3/4 stripped car. Next I will be starting the refitting with the complete wiring looms. I am even going to fit the extra sound deadening from the fairmont so the car will be nice and luxury quiet.

Snap, you still think the aftermarket central locking units are better, I am intrigued to know what it is you like about them? I have installed several kits over the years and found them to be rather cheap and nasty ... but functional...

I am however about to get serious with an electric window actuator reconstruction using denso motors and cables from a mitsubishi verada. I am hoping these are better than the rockwell units from the fords. They look very similar in design concept.

The factory ford units are well know for a high failure rate. Up here where it can get rather hot (over 40 today) and the locks just cycle up and down, instead of locking. Not to mention that god awful noise they make. My EB now locks and unlocks with dignity and style. as is befitting a Ghia. LOL

Well, as noted above, it was BLOODY HOT TODAY!!!!!!

Even so, I got out in the sun with some makeshift shade and got to work preparing the EL engine to go in the Wagon.

First thing was to remove the BBM as I will be using the Log manifold so I can retain the LPG setup. Next was to take off the other accessories and brackets as I wanted to paint the block.

The engine and parts were then thoroughly degreased and pressure cleaned before being air dried with the air gun. I then masked up the bits that I didn't want painted and then liberally applied the Flat Black Engine Enamel. I have to say, once painted it really looked a lot better.

I also painted the Harmonic Balancer. While there was no inlet manifold on the engine, I thought it was an opportune time to install a new rotor button, distributor cap, and new ignition leads. We all know what a PITA it is to do that with the manifold on.

The other job I wanted to do before the EL engine goes in the Wagon, was to paint my Pacemaker Extractors. So I got out the wet and dry and with Paulmac's assistance we sanded them down. I was really surprised at how easy the paint came off. I then painted them with Aluminium High Temp paint. I really like how they turned out.

You MADMAN, out inthe heat today! Typical crazy bloody Kiwi!! :)

And, you have been reading my mind again. Painting the block is something I will be doing before fitting the EL to the ED!

Came up damn nice, always like the look of a clean engine.

yeah the painted blocks look good, just dont let coolent leak on it. i have stains on my black block now and it wont come off

The aftermarkets are generic, but you can tweak them to perform better, they can be softened - the factory units don't give you that advantage. As mentioned, cycling is an issue. My XH had the worst groan you'd ever hear, and that was from 2 doors - the wagon was worse still, 5 of them groaning away. If they're set up well, experimented with, and your locks are free operating, aftermarkets are the only way to go IMO.
A good setup for the E series wagons is 4 x door aftermarkets, with the EA-ED wagon tailgate solenoid.
You only have to read the threads on here about people's satisfaction with aftermarkets.
You may be happy with the factory units - that's your choice and you shouldn't be criticised because of that, but you might not have tried to get the best out of the aftermarkets, and that's left you disappointed with them.

You see now you have me wondering......

I have doors all stripped down ready to reassemble electric windows and refit door mechanisms... I have good working factory central locking units.

Do I refit them? I am on a tight budget of course.
What brand kit would you recommend?

I am definitely re-working the electric window mechanisms and will report their performance. As far as I have learned, the factory Rockwell units take about 10 amps to drive and the Denso's are half that. The biggest issue with the Rockwells is the plastic damper sleeves at the ends disintegrating and jamming up the cable barrels. 3 of mine have this issue. I was going to machine some aluminium sleeves on a lathe. Instead I am making a complete hybrid of Denso units..... I will see how this goes.
It was 34 degrees here yesterday. I took a day off working on the car and fixed my internet issues instead. Now i am kicking myself as it is drizzling and I should have painted the rear leaf springs whilst it was nice and hot prior to reassmbly today. Dohh!

There's no huge difference between the Jaycar kits and others - except the price though . . . :(
EBgizmo made his own winders - can't remember whether he used Denso motors, but his thread is on here.

I remember someone bought some toyota/denso motors from oatley electronics.

I found mine in a mitsubishi at pick a part. had to smash a window to get them out.... oh well i have spend thousands there over the years.

I cant belive that this is a topic of discussion again, can you stll buy the factory door lock acuators from ford? I bet if you can thay are sadly overpriced.

Then you have second hand ones from the wrckers IMO you dont know what your getting this way and may find 6 months down the track you are changing the same one again.

i think the wise move is to not change the whole lot unless you 3 or more that are f**k, in other words if you only have 1 broken get a new factory one its prolly cheaper than a set of 4 after markets.

I have now had 4 smartlock falcons and have never had any issue with the factory actuators but that does not mean i am a fan of them either.

just leave them they work and if they dont change them over its as simple as that

Small Update.

Had a nice sleep in, and a quiet afternoon. I did make a trip to the RTA and finally transferred the Wagon ownership. The Red EB had it's rego cancelled, and I was able to keep the number plates, so that way another bit of the car will live on in the Wagon. It does look better with the White plates.

Then early this evening, after it had cooled down a bit, I got all motivated and now the ED engine is all unbolted and disconnected, ready to be lifted out in the morning.

The EL engine will recieve the Log Manifold off the ED engine currently in the wagon, the XH Tensioner and of course the T5 before going. The extractors go in afterwards.

Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow, it will all be done. The weather should be a fair bit cooler.

If you are referring to the EB/ED Momo wheel, then yes, if one comes along at a good price I may consider it.

But if your a talking about those bloody awful airbag wheels of any description, then no, I won't be going down that path.

So apart from my apparent dislike of the EF-AU steering wheels, :D the other reason is that I am using an EB steering column, and the later model wheels do not fit. I also like that I can have a steering wheel that is unique as I am not bound by legalities etc. And I still have my custom cruise control as well so there is no loss of functionality.
