Depends on what cam you are fitting as to if you need a tune. Only way to do a proper tune is to have it on a Dyno and at approx $600-$900 a shot that is a lot of money for just tuning a cam.

Why is it so expensive ?
All they do is drive it on. Connect up sensors . Get a read out on a pc . Then they just tune the j3 /ecu to suit.

I agree with but think of it this way. Your paying for their expertise, time and use of software which they have to buy for every different vehicle. So it's a matter of perspective. Do want someone cheap who doesn't really know what they are doing possibly dangerously leaning the engine trim out. Or pay a bit more for someone who knows what they are doing improving economy and power in one fowl swoop.

Only reason I can think of is to pay for the dyno.

I get what your saying . I would rather a good expensive tune done once rather than continuously going back with problems .

Ring up and find out what a new Mainline Dyno Costs and maybe you will understand, you then have the training required to learn how to operate and understand the information, plus then the experiance as well as wages, building rental, overheads, insurance, and 'd***head' that think they can do better than the operator. A good tune if the car is running properly will take a couple of hours and if it's running s**t or has issues this may take longer. If you want quality workmanship as well as knowlege that goes with a top class tuner, you will pay for it. You pay cheap you get s**t.

Think about a major service, costs $150 or so including oil, filter and plugs. Not a lot for something we do at home in a couple of hours if we have a bludge. You think you are going to get a Dyno tune for the same money........ Wake up Call.

I'm not a Mechanic but I have been round long enough to understand that people are in bussiness to make a living, not to fix you car up on the cheap so you are happy and they go out of bussiness. If it was just hooking up a couple of sensors and reading a PC, every workshop in the country would have one. There is skill involved in doing a good tune so that your car will perform at it's peak and not blow the f**k up a week later from some cheap tune......... DUH.......

Have a long hard think about the people that we expect to do things for us and spend a moment in their shoes.
